Anodic abatement of organic pollutants in water in micro reactors

2010

The electrochemical oxidation of oxalic acid (OA) was performed in a micro flow cell equipped with a boron doped diamond (BDD) anode. This preliminary study demonstrates that a flow cell with a micrometric distance between the cathode and the anode can be used to perform the electrochemical treatment of waters contaminated by organic pollutants in the absence of added supporting electrolytes with high abatements. The effect of the distance between the cathode and the anode, the flow rate and the current density on the abatement of oxalic acid and on the current efficiency was in particular studied.

Evolution of the Global Distribution of Carbon Dioxide: A Finite Mixture Analysis

2015

Economists and environmental policymakers have recently begun advocating a bottom-up approach to climate change mitigation, focusing on reduction targets for groups of nations, rather than large scale global policies. We advance this discussion by taking a quantitative perspective, focusing on econometric identification of groups of countries that have statistically similar distributions of carbon emissions using a broad range of finite mixture models. Nearly all of our results yield a consistent pattern: after 1980, there are two distinct emissions distributions, and that these distributions continue to evolve over time. We provide a rigorous analysis of these distributional differences al…

Michele Cometa, Il Trionfo della Morte. Un’allegoria della modernità

2018

Frequency influence on the hot-electron noise reduction in GaAs operating under periodic signals

2008

A Monte Carlo study of the role of the frequency on the hot-electron intrinsic noise reduction in an n-type GaAs bulk driven by two mixed cyclostationary electric fields is presented. Previous numerical results showed the possibility to reduce the diffusion noise under specific wave-mixing conditions. In this work the variations of the noise properties are investigated by computing and integrating the spectral density of the velocity fluctuations. We found that the effect of reduction of the noise level due to the addition of a second field at twice frequency is almost independent of the frequency.

ABATEMENT OF POLLUTANTS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS BY REVERSE ELECTRODIALYSIS PROCESSES

2013

Electrochemistry-based technologies are very promising methods for treating wastewaters containing organic and inorganic pollutants that are either resistant to biological processes or toxic for microorganisms [1]. On the other hand, in the reverse electrodialysis (RED), the electrical energy is directly extracted from chemical potential gradients arising from salinity differences [2], especially between brine solution and sea water. RED can be potentially used for the simultaneous generation of electrical energy and the treatment of waters contaminated by recalcitrant pollutants. The advantages of using the RED process for such dual purpose are: the utilization of a green reagent such as t…

Helicopter operations: the environmental impact and ground facilities. Procedures and operational standards for the system’s acceptance.

2012

The link between the heliports, environmental quality and safety is an important challenge in the field of helicopter transport. This challenge is especially crucial when the helicopter operations are carried out on densely urbanized areas. Often these areas have significant constraints and obstacles, particularly in terms of noise pollution. These constraints make the approach/takeoff maneuvers very complicated. The theme of the environmental sustainability of the rotorcraft is strongly felt in many countries. The production of noise is subjected to numerous rules and procedures, which tend to improve the acceptability of the helicopter by residents in neighboring areas to verti/heliports.…

Carlo Scarpa e la Galleria Regionale della Sicilia. L’assenza dell’angelo Gabriele e la presenza di Frank Lloyd Wright - The absence of the Angel Gab…

2017

The Mandamento Tribunali is situated on Via Alloro in Palermo. Within this historical quarter, you find Palazzo Abatellis. It stands only a few metres from the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and since 1954, it has been home to the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia. On a sunny day, while looking through the portal, one can unconsciously discover an alternation of spaces defined by shadow and light. The spectator is unaware that this sequence of shadow and light will be one of the guiding themes throughout the gallery. The initial sensation occurs before even entering the building and as such, the project must be clearly explained. Above all, we must ask why Carlo Scarpa, at the beginning …
