Mitochondrial glutathione oxidation correlates with age-associated oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA

Mitochondria may be primary targets of free radical damage associated with aging. We have found that mitochondrial glutathione is markedly oxidized with aging in rats and mice. The oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio rises with aging in the liver, kidney, and brain. The magnitude of these changes is much higher than that previously found in whole cells of any species previously studied. In the liver, this ratio (expressing GSSG as a percent of GSH) changed from 0.77 +/- 0.19% (n=5) in young rats to 2.47 +/- 1.25% (n=5) in old ones, i.e., 320% of the controls. Mitochondrial damage in aging and apoptosis.

: Mitochondria are essential to cellular aging, and free radical production by mitochondria is increased with aging. The rate of oxidant production by mitochondria correlates inversely with maximal life span of species. In many species, females live longer than males. We report that mitochondrial oxidant production by females is significantly lower than that of males. However, mitochondria from ovariectomized females have a similar oxidant production as those of males. Thus, gender difference in life span can be explained, at least in part, by different oxidant generation by mitochondria. Prescription of anti-osteoporosis medications after hospitalization for hip fracture: a multicentre Italian survey.

Purpose: Literature data indicate that the proportion of patients with recent hip fracture who receive a prescription for anti-osteoporotic drugs is low and does not seem to increase over time. This study aimed to obtain data on the prescription for anti-osteoporotic drugs in Italian patients discharged after a recent hip fracture and to assess which variables could have influenced the decision for prescribing osteoporosis medication. Nonsurgical treatment of earlobe aging in Mowlavi stages I and II earlobe ptosis with Hyaluronic acid fillers.

Background: Earlobe deflation caused by fat atrophy is normally treated with lipofilling, mostly in the context of facelift surgery. In this report, we aim at reporting on Hyaluronic Acid injections to treat earlobe deflation. Materials and Methods: 16 Mowlavi Grade I and II patients were treated with HA injections, followed by molding to shape the lobule. Results: Effective correction, lasting 14 months on average, is achieved. Five patients needed a touch-up procedure after 4-6 months to improve the result.
