Amino acids with small side chains and motifs of small residues in a distance of four are rather abundant in human single-span transmembrane helices. While interaction of such helices appears to be common, the role of the small residues in mediating and/or stabilizing transmembrane helix oligomers remains mostly elusive. Proximate Composition and Nutritional Value of Three Macroalgae: Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus and Bifurcaria bifurcata

Proximate composition (moisture, protein, lipid and ash content) and nutritional value (fatty acid, amino acid and mineral profile) of three macroalgae (Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus and Bifurcaria bifurcate) were studied. Chemical composition was significantly (p < 0.001) different among the three seaweeds. In this regard, the B. bifurcata presented the highest fat content (6.54% of dry matter); whereas, F. vesiculosus showed the highest protein level (12.99% dry matter). Giant hepatocellular adenoma as cause of severe abdominal pain: a case report

Abstract The authors describe the case of a large hepatocellular adenoma diagnosed in a 30-year old woman who came to us complaining of acute pain in the upper abdominal quadrants. The patient had been taking an oral contraceptive pill for the last ten years. We present the clinical features, the diagnostic work-up and the treatment prescribed.

Partially competitive inhibition of intestinal baclofen absorption by beta-alanine, a nonessential dietary aminoacid.

In situ intestinal absorption of baclofen in the rat in the presence of beta-alanine has been investigated. Through the perfusion of 0.50 mM baclofen solutions containing variable concentrations of the aminoacid (from 5 to 100 mM), a partially competitive inhibition of baclofen absorption was characterized: absorption rate pseudoconstants of the spasmolytic drug decrease as beta-alanine concentration increases, until a limiting value is obtained (36.8 per cent of that found for baclofen alone). A comparative study of the performance of acetonitrile and methanol in the multi-linear gradient separation of proteic primary amino acids

The performance of the separation of proteic primary amino acids using multi-linear gradients of acetonitrile and methanol was studied under an experimental-design basis, using an Inertsil ODS-3 column and pre-column derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC). Elution strength, peak properties, resolution, and analysis time, were examined. The optimal separation was established through modeling, using information obtained from isocratic data. Novel mutations of the MET proto-oncogene in papillary renal carcinomas.

Hereditary papillary renal carcinoma (HPRC) is characterized by multiple, bilateral papillary renal carcinomas. Previously, we demonstrated missense mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the MET proto-oncogene in HPRC and a subset of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas. In this study, we screened a large panel of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas and various solid tumors for mutations in the MET proto-oncogene. Expression of the pea S -adenosylmethionine decarboxylase gene is involved in developmental and environmental responses

A cDNA, able to complement the S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (SAMdC; EC 4.1.1.50)-defective yeast strain Y342, has been isolated from pea (Pisum sativum L.). Expression of the SAMdC gene was characterised during pea development. Northern analysis showed a differential expression of the pea SAMdC gene in vegetative and reproductive tissues. The highest SAMdC mRNA levels were found in undifferentiated callus and tissues with high rates of cell division, and at the onset of fruit development.
