Optimum Design and Performance of an Electron Gun for a Ka-Band TWT

2019

This paper deals with optimum design and development of a thermionic electron gun to meet specified beam requirements within defined electric and geometric constraints for a Ka -band traveling wave tube (TWT) for space applications. The electron gun design is based on the Pierce method and carried out according to the iterative process indicated by Vaughan. The design of a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) beam focusing system for the stability of the beam is also required. A sensitivity analysis, by varying electric parameters and geometric parameters, is presented and taken into account as a fundamental role to the aim of optimizing the design of the Pierce gun. A cathode current value of 5…

Batch-to-Melt Conversion Kinetics in Sodium Aluminosilicate Batches Using Different Alumina Raw Materials

2016

The batch-to-melt conversion in batches of sand, soda ash and corundum (C), alumina spinel (A), boehmite (B), or gibbsite (G) as Al2O3 carrier are studied using thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Laboratory-scaled batches are either heated continuously or quenched from 1600°C in a series of increasing dwell times. The results show that the conversion from the raw materials to the fresh melt proceeds in two kinetic stages. During the first stage (3–5 min), fast conversion of nearly 95% by mass occurs and the conversion coefficient increases in the order G < C ≈ A < B. The second stage is controlled by the slow dissolution of intermediate cr…

The filter and calibration wheel for the ATHENA wide field imager

2016

The planned filter and calibration wheel for the Wide Field Imager (WFI) instrument on Athena is presented. With four selectable positions it provides the necessary functions, in particular an UV/VIS blocking filter for the WFI detectors and a calibration source. Challenges for the filter wheel design are the large volume and mass of the subsystem, the implementation of a robust mechanism and the protection of the ultra-thin filter with an area of 160 mm square. This paper describes performed trade-offs based on simulation results and describes the baseline design in detail. Reliable solutions are envisaged for the conceptual design of the filter and calibration wheel. Four different varian…

A General Mathematical Formulation for the Determination of Differential Leakage Factors in Electrical Machines with Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Ful…

2018

This paper presents a simple and general mathematical formulation for the determination of the differential leakage factor for both symmetrical and asymmetrical full and dead-coil windings of electrical machines. The method can be applied to all multiphase windings and considers Gorges polygons in conjunction with masses geometry in order to find an easy and affordable way to compute the differential leakage factor, avoiding the adoption of traditional methods that refer to the Ossanna's infinite series, which has to be obviously truncated under the bound of a predetermined accuracy. Moreover, the method described in this paper allows the easy determination of both the minimum and maximum v…

Analog isolated electronic dynamometer based on a magnetoresistive current sensor.

2017

In this work, an electronic system is presented to measure the force applied by a solenoid. The originality of the work is focused on the use of a magnetoresistive current sensor to provide the isolation barrier needed in the actual industrial plant where the solenoids are working. The design of the electronic system is presented as well as experimental measurements as a result of a calibration process showing a negligible hysteresis with that specific sensor. The magnetoresistive current sensor is used to develop transmission functions rather than playing its usual sensing roles.

An exact method for the determination of differential leakage factors in electrical machines with non-symmetrical windings

2016

An exact and simple method for the determination of differential leakage factors in polyphase ac electrical machines with non-symmetrical windings is presented in this paper. The method relies on the properties of Gorges polygons that are used to transform an infinite series expressing the differential leakage factor into a finite sum in order to significantly simplify the calculations. Some examples are shown and discussed in order to practically demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A fully-digital realtime SoC FPGA based phase noise analyzer with cross-correlation

2017

We report on a fully-digital and realtime operation of a phase noise analyzer using modern digital techniques with cross-correlation. With the advent of system on chip field-programmable gate arrays (SoC FPGAs) embedding hard core central processing unit, coprocessor and FPGA onto a single integrated circuit, the building of sensitive analysis devices for Time & Frequency research is made accessible at virtually no cost and benefits from reconfigurability. Used with high-speed digitizers we have successfully implemented a four-channel system whose preliminary results at 10 MHz shows a residual white noise floor < −185 dBrad2/Hz up to 5 MHz off the carrier, and flicker < −127 dBrad2/Hz using…

A Magnetohydrodynamic Auxiliary Propulsion system for docking assistance of autonomous vehicle

2016

In this article we present an approach to the description of Magnetohydrodynamic Auxiliary Propulsion system for docking assistance of autonomous vehicle. Preliminarily, an analytical model which includes an electromagnetic model and a thermal model is presented. Successively, in order to move beyond the analytical model, a 3-D MHD modeling tool and a Runge Kutta method based solver are presented and they are used to investigate an alternative MHD solutions. Some numerical analysis are given

Strategies for numerical simulation of linear friction welding of metals: a review

2017

Linear friction welding (LFW) is a solid-state joining process used to weld non-axisymmetric components. Material joining is obtained through the reciprocating motion of two specimens undergoing an axial force. During this process, the heat source is determined by the frictional work transformed into heat. This results in a local softening of the material and plays a key role in the onset of the bonding conditions. In this paper, a critical analysis of the different approaches used to simulate the LFW processes is provided. The focus of the paper is the comparison of different modeling strategies and the most relevant outputs available, i.e. temperature, strain and stress distribution, mate…

Systematic and statistical uncertainties of the hilbert-transform based high-precision FID frequency extraction method.

2021

Abstract Pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used in high-precision magnetic field measurements. The absolute value of the magnetic field is determined from the precession frequency of nuclear magnetic moments. The Hilbert transform is one of the methods that have been used to extract the phase function from the observed free induction decay (FID) signal and then its frequency. In this paper, a detailed implementation of a Hilbert-transform based FID frequency extraction method is described, and it is briefly compared with other commonly used frequency extraction methods. How artifacts and noise level in the FID signal affect the extracted phase function are derived analytical…
