(Table 1) Sea surface temperature reconstruction for eastern equatorial Pacific surface sediment samples

2012

Significant uncertainties persist in the reconstruction of past sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific, especially regarding the amplitude of the glacial cooling and the details of the post-glacial warming. Here we present the first regional calibration of alkenone unsaturation in surface sediments versus mean annual sea surface temperatures (maSST). Based on 81 new and 48 previously published data points, it is shown that open ocean samples conform to established global regressions of Uk'37 versus maSST and that there is no systematic bias from seasonality in the production or export of alkenones, or from surface ocean nutrient concentrations or salinity. The flattening…

La tavolozza di Don Chisciotte: il carteggio Sciascia-Guccione

2023

Trought the unpublished correspondence between Leonardo Sciascia and Piero Guccione (1975-1989), is possible to analyse the intrinsec relationship between aesthetics and ethics, artistic vein and civil engagement, but also to retrace Sciascia’s controversies in the 1970s, thus illustrating the antagonistic and conflictual relationship between intellectuals and power.

Settore L-FIL-LET/10 - Letteratura Italiana

Risk Preference Heterogeneity and Multiple Demand for Insurance

2010

We examined the relationship between unobserved risk preferences and four insurance purchase decisions: health Medigap insurance, long-term insurance, life insurance and annuity. Standard economic theory assumes that individuals take decision over a set of risky domains according to their own risk preferences which are stable across decision contexts. This assumption of context-invariant risk preference has caused debate in the literature concerning its validity. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we exploit latent class analysis to identify conditional on predicted and realized risk how heterogeneity in risk preferences affects multiple insurance demand. Our results provide e…

Flexible Spare Core Placement in Torus Topology based NoCs and its validation on an FPGA

2021

In the nano-scale era, Network-on-Chip (NoC) interconnection paradigm has gained importance to abide by the communication challenges in Chip Multi-Processors (CMPs). With increased integration density on CMPs, NoC components namely cores, routers, and links are susceptible to failures. Therefore, to improve system reliability, there is a need for efficient fault-tolerant techniques that mitigate permanent faults in NoC based CMPs. There exists several fault-tolerant techniques that address the permanent faults in application cores while placing the spare cores onto NoC topologies. However, these techniques are limited to Mesh topology based NoCs. There are few approaches that have realized …

Rpb4 and Puf3 imprint and post-transcriptionally control the stability of a common set of mRNAs in yeast

2020

ABSTRACTGene expression involving RNA polymerase II is regulated by the concerted interplay between mRNA synthesis and degradation, crosstalk in which mRNA decay machinery and transcription machinery respectively impact transcription and mRNA stability. Rpb4, and likely dimer Rpb4/7, seem the central components of the RNA pol II governing these processes. In this work we unravel the molecular mechanisms participated by Rpb4 that mediate the posttranscriptional events regulating mRNA imprinting and stability. By RIP-Seq, we analyzed genome-wide the association of Rpb4 with mRNAs and demonstrated that it targeted a large population of more than 1400 transcripts. A group of these mRNAs was als…

De Novo Assembly and Functional Annotation of the Olive (Olea europaea) Transcriptome

2013

Olive breeding programmes are focused on selecting for traits as short juvenile period, plant architecture suited for mechanical harvest, or oil characteristics, including fatty acid composition, phenolic, and volatile compounds to suit new markets. Understanding the molecular basis of these characteristics and improving the efficiency of such breeding programmes require the development of genomic information and tools. However, despite its economic relevance, genomic information on olive or closely related species is still scarce. We have applied Sanger and 454 pyrosequencing technologies to generate close to 2 million reads from 12 cDNA libraries obtained from the Picual, Arbequina, and L…

Semantic annotation and big data techniques for patent information processing

2017

This thesis analyzes approaches to generate semantic annotations on patent records, as well as on other structured data, by relying on the structure and semantic representation of documents. Information in patent records reflects how real-world technologies evolve, and the approximately 3 million annual new patent applications capture the global inventive frontier. The volume of this information is too big to be effectively analyzed purely with human effort, necessitating Big data approaches to analyze it with computer aided tools and techniques. Big data is a term that describes a massive volume of structured, semi structured and unstructured data that is so large to the point that it is d…

Searches for rare or forbidden semileptonic charm decays

2011

We present searches for rare or forbidden charm decays of the form $X_c^+\to h^\pm\ell^\mp\ell^{(\prime)+}$, where $X_c^+$ is a charm hadron ($D^+$, $D^+_s$, or $\Lambda_c^+$), $h^\pm$ is a pion, kaon, or proton, and $\ell^{(\prime)\pm}$ is an electron or muon. The analysis is based on $384 fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at or close to the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the 35 decay modes that are investigated. We establish 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions between $1 \times 10^{-6}$ and $44 \times 10^{-6}$ depending on the channel. In most…
