Ronald Dworkin e il positivismo giuridico: un bilancio provvisorio
2014
The controversy between Dworkin and legal positivism has lasted more than forty years. After Dworkin’s death, a reflection on this debate is needed. This paper faces some of the most important and popular arguments Dworkin advanced against legal positivism. More precisely, the article is divided in two main parts. The first is devoted to a critical presentation of three arguments developed by Dworkin in his early essays against Hart’s practice theory of norms. In particular, these arguments challenge a) the idea that law is a system of rules; b) the autonomy of legal obligation from moral one and c) the idea that judges exercise (strong) discretion in hard cases. The second part analyses tw…

Selecting information to answer questions: Strategic individual differences when searching texts
2011
The purpose of the study was to explore students’ selection of information strategies in a task-oriented reading situation. 72 secondary school students read two texts and answered six questions per text, three of which were manipulated to induce a misleading matching between the wording of the question and distracting pieces of information in the text. The reading and question-answering were presented with the software Read&Answer. We analyzed how skilled and less-skilled comprehenders were attracted to the distracting pieces of information and how this affected reading patterns and task outcomes. Skilled comprehenders scored higher and were able to discard the distracting information. In …
Three-Dimensional Strain Analysis of Single-Lap Bolted Joints in Thick Composites Using Fibre-Optic Gauges and the Finite-Element Method
2010
Bolted joints involving composite plates used to be almost entirely dedicated to aerospace applications. As the need for energy conservation has increased, the field of composite bolted joints has found new applications in ground armoured vehicles. Thick panels able to withstand large in-plane and impact loads are critical. The present investigation evaluates the interior strain field, through the thickness, of a composite plate connected to an aluminium panel with a single-lap bolted joint. The area of interest is the bearing plane region close to the hole because of the presence of stress concentrations that heavily modify the stress field. Experimental data for the bolted joint were rec…
Combinatorics of generalized Bethe equations
2012
A generalization of the Bethe ansatz equations is studied, where a scalar two-particle S-matrix has several zeroes and poles in the complex plane, as opposed to the ordinary single pole/zero case. For the repulsive case (no complex roots), the main result is the enumeration of all distinct solutions to the Bethe equations in terms of the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Two new combinatorial interpretations of the Fuss-Catalan and related numbers are obtained. On the one hand, they count regular orbits of the permutation group in certain factor modules over \({\mathbb{Z}^M}\), and on the other hand, they count integer points in certain M-dimensional polytopes.
Does the immune answer to Bacillus thuringiensis infection is the same in larvae, females and males of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus?
2021
Current communication technologies in language processing
2015
Even the most cutting-edge communication-mediated technology like satellite navigation for orbit positioning, pedestrian movement recognition systems based on inertial sensors, 5G systems, let alone medical devices for coordination of human organs functionality would not be invented without technologies for language processing as an information source between humans and communication systems. Regardless of the way we communicate that is via emails, website short tweets, video conferencing systems, social networking, blogs, instant messaging through websites or mobile applications, or texting only, we use a language that is processed by computer system. Thus, the keynote paper discusses lang…
Quantum and Classical Statistical Mechanics of the Integrable Models in 1 + 1 Dimensions
1990
In a short but remarkable paper Yang and Yang [1] showed that the free energy of a model system consisting of N bosons on a line with repulsive δ-function interactions was given by a set of coupled integral equations. The Yangs’ chosen model is in fact the repulsive version of the quantum Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) model. We have shown that with appropriate extensions and different dispersion relations and phase shifts similar formulae apply to ‘all’ of the integrable models quantum or classical. These models include the sine-Gordon (s-G) and sinh-Gordon (sinh-G) models, the two NLS models (attractive and repulsive), the Landau-Lifshitz (L-L’) model which includes all four previous models,…
Thermodynamics of Toda lattice models: application to DNA
1993
Abstract Our generalised Bethe ansatz method is used to formulate the statistical mechanics of the classical Toda lattice in terms of a set of coupled integral equations expressed in terms of appropriate action-angle variables. The phase space as coordinatised by these action-angle variables is constrained; and both the soliton number density and the soliton contribution to the free energy density can be shown to decouple from the phonon degrees of freedom and to depend only on soliton-soliton interactions. This makes it possible to evaluate the temperature dependence of the soliton number density which, to leading order, is found to be proportional to T 1 3 .
