Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmospheric particulate matter of Valencia city

1991

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in atmospheric particulate matter in 11 sites of the Valencia area and at several times during the year. Sample analysis was carried out by ultrasonic acetonitrile extraction followed by reverse phase HPLC separation and fluorescence detection. The maximum concentration of total PAH developed in winter and spring. Mean values per sampling site varied from 0.193 to 1.668 μg/m3 of filtered air. Environmental noise and temperature were determined at those same 11 sites and correlated with PAH levels.

Complex Metabolic Activation Pathways of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: 3-Hydroxy-trans-7,8-Dihydroxy-7,8-Dihydrobenzo[a]Pyrene as a Proximate Mut…

1988

3-Hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP) is a major metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene (BP) in various systems. Metabolites of 3-OH-BP, formed by liver enzymes, bind to DNA1,2 and are mutagenic3,4. However, the active species have not yet been identified. Administration of 3-OH-BP to rats results in the excretion of sulfate and glucuronic acid conjugates of 3-hydroxy-trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH-BP-7,8-diol) (Fig. 1) as major metabolites in the bile5. The hydroxyl groups of this triol are structurally superimposable to those of 9-hydroxy-trans-1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydrochrysene (9-hydroxychrysene-1,2-diol, Fig. 1), which is a metabolite of chrysene6,7 and a potent promutagen8,9. 9-…

Screening of ligands for the Ullmann synthesis of electron-rich diaryl ethers

2012

In the search for new ligands for the Ullmann diaryl ether synthesis, permitting the coupling of electron-rich aryl bromides at relatively low temperatures, 56 structurally diverse multidentate ligands were screened in a model system that uses copper iodide in acetonitrile with potassium phosphate as the base. The ligands differed largely in their performance, but no privileged structural class could be identified.

Allylated cyclodextrins as effective affinity materials in chemical sensing of volatile aromatic hydrocarbons using an optical planar Bragg grating s…

2013

We report on the application of perallyl-substituted α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins to an optical planar Bragg grating refractive index sensor for the effective sensitization of the sensor for airborne volatile aromatic hydrocarbons. Thereby, the emphasis of this work lies on the comparison of the different cyclodextrin types regarding their suitability as affinity material assessed by the sensors sensitivity and response behavior. The opto-chemical sensor device showed an immediate and quick response to the application of the investigated analytes benzene, toluene and m-xylene as well as a linear dependence on the concentration of those analytes. Studies on the sensors sensitivity depending on…

The PAH composition in limpets (Patella vulgate L.) from the coasts of Sicily (Italy)

2006

This article examines the presence, distribution, nature and sources of 19 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), in Patellae (patella vulgate L.) and seaweed (vulva) sampled in different stations of Sicilian coastal environments and analyzed for their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with selected ion monitoring (SIM), after saponification of the sample and clean up of the extract. In the limpets the total concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from 34 to 750 μg/Kg of dry matrix. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the replicas on the concentrations of individual compounds ranged fr…

Synthesis of cyclic dipeptide templates, their incorporation into peptides and studies on their conformational and biological properties.

2009

This study investigated the diastereoselective synthesis of three dipeptide templates 1, 2 and 3, which may be regarded as conformationally restricted analogs of H-Gly-Xaa-OH, in which Xaa constitutes an aromatic amino acid. Bond formation between α-C of Gly and the aromatic moiety was achieved by proton-catalyzed intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution. The absolute configuration of the dipeptide templates was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography or by nuclear Overhauser enhancement measurements. A protective group strategy was elaborated to allow their incorporation into peptide sequences by liquid phase as well as by solid-phase peptide synthesis. The templates w…

CO2 as a C1-organic building block: Electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones. A quantitative study of the effect of the concentration of substrate an…

2006

The purpose of this work is to establish and discuss quantitative relationships between the selectivity in preparative scale electrolysis and intrinsic and operational parameters for the electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones. For the investigated ketones, under appopriate experimental conditions the selectivity of the process is mainly determined by the competition between carboxylation and protonation, de-halogenation reactions (when an halogenated ketone is involved), and possibly dimerizations involving the electrogenerated radical anion. A simple model was proposed to account for these unwanted side paths which allows to predict the dependence of the selectivity as a function of the …

Lauroyl peroxide as thermal initiator of lauryl methacrylate monolithic columns for CEC

2008

The preparation of lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-based monolithic columns for CEC using lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as thermal initiator of polymerization has been investigated. The influence of initiator amount and composition of porogenic solvent on the physical and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting LMA-based monoliths was evaluated. A comparison with LMA-based columns thermally polymerized with AIBN was performed. At a given porogenic solvent composition, LMA stationary phases initiated with LPO showed higher permeabilities and better efficiency values than those prepared using AIBN as initiator. The optimum polymerization mixture found for LPO initiator provided a minimum plate …
