Inmigrantes “chinxs” en la Buenos Aires globalizada
2018
The Obesity Paradox Predicts the Second Wave of COVID-19 to Be Severe in Western Countries.
2021
While COVID-19 infection and mortality rates are soaring in Western countries, Southeast Asian countries have successfully avoided the second wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic despite high population density. We provide a biochemical hypothesis for the connection between low COVID-19 incidence, mortality rates, and high visceral adiposity in Southeast Asian populations. The SARS-CoV-2 virus uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a gateway into the human body. Although the highest expression levels of ACE2 are found in people’s visceral adipose tissue in Southeast Asia, this does not necessarily make them vulnerable to COVID-19. Hypothetically, high levels of visceral adiposity cause s…

Mazinvazīvā paceles un apakšstilba artēriju revaskularizācija
2016

Hydrological consequences of natural rubber plantations in Southeast Asia
2020
Since the turn of the century, rubber plantations have been expanding their footprint across Southeast Asia in response to an increasing global demand for rubber products. Between 2000 and 2014, the area cultivated with rubber more than doubled. It is not clear how this major change in the agricultural landscape of Southeast Asia, the main area of rubber production in the world, is affecting land‐use patterns and water resources in the region. Here we use maps of rubber plantations and other croplands in conjunction with a hydrological model and remote sensing analyses to assess land‐use patterns and water resources affected by natural rubber plantations. Results show water requirements of …

Lipeälampi - sitkeä vastustaja : tapaustutkimus keskisuomalaisesta ympäristökonfliktista
2011
Tämän pro gradu-tutkielman tehtävänä on tarkastella, miksi Laukaan Koivusuolle sellutehtaan päästöistä muodostuneesta Lipeälammesta on vuosikymmenten mittaan kehittynyt vaikeasti ratkaistava ympäristökonflikti. Tutkimus selvittää, millaisia vaiheita ympäristökonfliktin ympärillä on eletty ja kuinka konfliktia on tuotu esille yhteiskunnallisessa keskustelussa. Kolmen eri teoreettisen näkökulman (taloudellinen- ympäristöllinen- toimijakeskeinen) kautta on pyritty löytämään vastauksia siihen, miten Lipeälammen ympäristökonfliktia on viranomaisten ja paikallisten toimesta käsitelty ja kuinka mielipiteet ovat määrittyneet eri toimijoiden kesken. Lipeälammesta kärsineelle, laajan järvialueen käsi…
Stipa zeravshanicasp. nov. (Poaceae), an endemic species from rocky walls of the western Pamir Alai Mountains (middle Asia)
2013
Stipa zeravshanica M. Nobis sp. nov. from the western Pamir Alai Mts (Tajikistan) is described and illustrated. Morphologically, the new species is similar to S. gracilis, but it is easily distinguishable by pilose (vs. glabrous) lower part of the awn, and generally somewhat longer ligules of the vegetative shoots. Epidermal patterns of the lemma in S. zeravshanica and three other closely related taxa, namely S. gracilis, S. himalaica and S. orientalis, were examined by means of SEM. The main macro-morphological and micro-morphological characteristics differentiating all mentioned species are presented. Additionally, a lectotype for S. gracilis is designated. Based on phytosociological rele…
The zoom-on-possessee construction in Kam (Dong): the anatomy of a new construction type
2005
Kam, a Kadai language spoken in Guizhou province (People's Republic of China), has a family of intransitive possessive constructions with the word order ‘Possessor–Verb–Possessee’. (The basic word order in Kam is SV and AVO.) While two recent papers have featured this unique construction type for an array of other Southeast Asian languages, they fail to acknowledge its distinct semantic value in contrast to the related construction type ‘Possessee–Possessor–Verb’. The former construction type displays a so-called ‘zoom-effect’: the possessor is predicated IN, AT or THROUGH his/her/its possessee; the predication zooms from the possessor on his/her/its possessee. The latter construction, in c…
