An allergen-polymeric nanoaggregate as a new tool for allergy vaccination.
2014
Parietaria pollen is one of the major causes of allergic reaction in southern Europe, affecting about 30% of all allergic patients in this area. Specifi immunotherapy is the only treatment able to modify the natural outcome of the disease by restoring a normal immunity against allergens. The preparation of allergen-solid lipid nanoparticles as delivery vehicles for therapeutic proteins, P. judaica major allergen Par j 2, was investigated. The Par j 2 allergen was expressed in a large amount in Escherichia coli and purifid to homogeneity. Its immunological properties were studied by western blotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay inhibition. Solid lipid nanoparticles were obtained by …
Carbon nanotubes as electrodes for dielectrophoresis of DNA
2006
Dielectrophoresis can potentially be used as an efficient trapping tool in the fabrication of molecular devices. For nanoscale objects, however, the Brownian motion poses a challenge. We show that the use of carbon nanotube electrodes makes it possible to apply relatively low trapping voltages and still achieve high enough field gradients for trapping nanoscale objects, e.g., single molecules. We compare the efficiency and other characteristics of dielectrophoresis between carbon nanotube electrodes and lithographically fabricated metallic electrodes, in the case of trapping nanoscale DNA molecules. The results are analyzed using finite element method simulations and reveal information abou…
Dielectrophoretic trapping of multilayer DNA origami nanostructures and DNA origami-induced local destruction of silicon dioxide
2015
DNA origami is a widely used method for fabrication of custom-shaped nanostructures. However, to utilize such structures, one needs to controllably position them on nanoscale. Here we demonstrate how different types of 3D scaffolded multilayer origamis can be accurately anchored to lithographically fabricated nanoelectrodes on a silicon dioxide substrate by DEP. Straight brick-like origami structures, constructed both in square (SQL) and honeycomb lattices, as well as curved "C"-shaped and angular "L"-shaped origamis were trapped with nanoscale precision and single-structure accuracy. We show that the positioning and immobilization of all these structures can be realized with or without thi…
In Vitro Dialyzability of Zinc from Different Salts Used in the Supplementation of Infant Formulas
1999
Seven zinc salts--acetate, chloride, lactate, sulfate, citrate, gluconate, and oxide--were added to milk--and soy-based infant formulas to estimate possible differences in zinc availability depending on the type of salt used. For this purpose, an in vitro method that estimates the dialyzability of the element (i.e., the fraction available for absorption) was applied. Zinc dialyzability is always higher in milk-based products than in soy products, even when the total zinc contents are higher in the latter. The salts can be classified according to the zinc dialyzability in the two types of formulas as follows: oxidegluconate = chloride = lactatecitrate = acetatesulfate. Therefore, according t…
Cadmium binding proteins induced in exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii.
1989
This work describes results on the characterization of cadmium binding proteins (Cd-BPs) obtained from cadmium exposed freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii. After acclimation to laboratory conditions, induction of Cd-BPs was achieved by water exposure at a concentration of 100 micrograms Cd/L during 2, 15, and 30 d. In accordance with the method followed by Engel and Brouwer, in each case two midgut glands were minced and homogenized in Tris-HC1 buffer with PMSF to prevent protease activity and DTT to maintain reducing conditions. The homogenate was centrifuged, heat treated, applied to a column of Sephadex G-75, and eluted with the same buffer (pH 8.6). Absorbances of the fractions coll…

Journeys from quantum optics to quantum technology
2017
Sir Peter Knight is a pioneer in quantum optics which has now grown to an important branch of modern physics to study the foundations and applications of quantum physics. He is leading an effort to develop new technologies from quantum mechanics. In this collection of essays, we recall the time we were working with him as a postdoc or a PhD student and look at how the time with him has influenced our research.
Determination and evaluation of cadmium, lead and nickel in greenhouse soils of Almerı́a (Spain)
2004
This study determines total levels of three (Cd, Pb and Ni) potentially toxic trace elements in western Almería (Spain) greenhouse surface soil horizons using microwave digestion; it establishes the geochemical baseline concentration, and it investigates possible relationships between soil properties and elemental concentrations. The results show that the soil concentration of these heavy metals is lower than mentioned in the European and Spanish normative, but they are higher than those reported by other authors working on agricultural soils. The obtained geochemical baseline concentrations (mg kg(-1)) were: Cd 0.4-0.8, Pb 2.5-89.9 and Ni 16.1-30.7. Using the upper baseline criterion, 88% …

A brief sketch of the reception of Epicureanism in early modern natural philosophy and metaphysics (15th-18th centuries)
Stability criteria, atomization and non-thermal processes in liquids
2008
Analyzing the first equation in the BBGKY chain of equations for an equilibrium liquid-gas system, we derived the analytical expression for the atom work function from liquid into gas. The coupling between the atom work function from liquid into vacuum and the stability criterion of liquid in limiting points of the first type was shown (using I.Z.. Fisher classification). As it turned out, Fisher's criterion corresponds to the condition of atomization. We have expressed the state equation in terms of the atom work function from liquid into vacuum and performed calculations of the limiting line of stability composed of limiting points of the first type for argon. Our model discovers an inter…
