Automatic auditory and somatosensory brain responses in relation to cognitive abilities and physical fitness in older adults

AbstractIn normal ageing, structural and functional changes in the brain lead to an altered processing of sensory stimuli and to changes in cognitive functions. The link between changes in sensory processing and cognition is not well understood, but physical fitness is suggested to be beneficial for both. We recorded event-related potentials to somatosensory and auditory stimuli in a passive change detection paradigm from 81 older and 38 young women and investigated their associations with cognitive performance. Zastosowanie metodyki audytu krajobrazowego do identyfikacji krajobrazów w skali lokalnej na przykładzie gminy Szczyrk

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki identyfikacji i oceny krajobrazów gminy Szczyrk. W badaniach zastosowano metodę audytu krajobrazowego i trzy kryteria delimitacji: ukształtowanie terenu, kompozycję przestrzenną oraz pokrycie terenu. Badania prowadzono na obszarze górskim, gdzie dotychczas metoda nie była testowana. Stwierdzono występowanie 58 jednostek krajobrazowych należących do 13 typów. Powierzchniowo dominują krajobrazy leśne. Układ jednostek nawiązuje do pięter klimatyczno-roślinnych. Wraz ze zwiększaniem skali badań maleją powierzchnie jednostek, nie maleje znacząco ich liczba. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar empíricamente los factores que influyen en el monto de los honorarios de auditoría en México, partiendo de una muestra de 59 empresas que cotizan en la Bolsa Mexicana de Valores (BMV), durante el período de 2002 a 2008. Por un lado, existe un conflicto de atención visual entre ver un vídeo y realizar una tarea escrita simultáneamente. Por otro lado, prestar atención a la imagen, al audio, y a la actividad al mismo tiempo puede saturar la memoria de trabajo. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a scalp-recorded electrical potential that occurs in humans in response to an auditory stimulus that defies previously established patterns of regularity. MMN amplitude is reduced in people with schizophrenia. In this study, we aimed to develop a robust and replicable rat model of MMN, as a platform for a more thorough understanding of the neurobiology underlying MMN. The aim of the study is to reveal the role of sound in action anticipation and performance, and to test whether the level of precision in action planning and execution is related to the level of sensorimotor skills and experience that listeners possess about a specific action. Individuals ranging from 18 to 75 years of age - some of them without any skills in skateboarding and others experts in this sport - were compared in their ability to anticipate and simulate a skateboarding jump by listening to the sound it produces. The frequency-following response (FFR) to periodic complex sounds has gained recent interest in auditory cognitive neuroscience as it captures with great fidelity the tracking accuracy of the periodic sound features in the ascending auditory system.
