Absence Seizure Detection Algorithm for Portable EEG Devices
2021
Absence seizures are generalized nonmotor epileptic seizures with abrupt onset and termination. Transient impairment of consciousness and spike-slow wave discharges (SWDs) in EEG are their characteristic manifestations. This type of seizure is severe in two common pediatric syndromes: childhood (CAE) and juvenile (JAE) absence epilepsy. The appearance of low-cost, portable EEG devices has paved the way for long-term, remote monitoring of CAE and JAE patients. The potential benefits of this kind of monitoring include facilitating diagnosis, personalized drug titration, and determining the duration of pharmacotherapy. Herein, we present a novel absence detection algorithm based on the propert…
Job insecurity and sickness absence: Correlations between attrition and absence in 36 occupational groups
2012
Aims: To investigate how job insecurity, as indicated by attrition rates out of employment, affects sickness absence among remaining workers. Methods: A longitudinal analysis investigated how the percentage of workers absent due to sickness was affected by attrition out of employment in Norwegian Labour Force Surveys from 1997 to 2005, between 31 quarterly observations at the level of 36 occupational groups. Results: Rising attrition is associated with more sickness absence. Conclusions: Previous research has argued that job insecurity can lead to more absence because of a stressor effect as well as to less absence because of a disciplinary effect. This research indicates that the stressor…
Work incapacity among family caregivers : a record linkage study
2022
BackgroundFamily caregiving-related physical and mental health problems may lead to work incapacity in employed caregivers. The aim of this study was to quantify sickness absences and disability pensions (SADP) among high-intensity family caregivers available to the labour market compared with a control population.MethodsThe study sample included all individuals in Finland, who had received caregiver’s allowance and were available to the labour market in 2012 (n=16 982) and their controls (n=35 371). Information on the number of sickness absence (spells >10 days) and disability pension (SADP) days and related diagnoses according to ICD-10 were obtained from national registers for the yea…
Extensive molecular analysis of patients bearing CFTR-related disorders.
2012
Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)–related disorders (CFTR-RDs) may present with pancreatic sufficiency, normal sweat test results, and better outcome. The detection rate of mutations is lower in CFTR-RD than in classic CF: mutations may be located in genes encoding proteins that interact with CFTR or support channel activity. We tested the whole CFTR coding regions in 99 CFTR-RD patients, looking for gene mutations in solute carrier (SLC) 26A and in epithelial Na channel (ENaC) in 33 patients who had unidentified mutations. CFTR analysis revealed 28 mutations, some of which are rare. Of these mutations, RT-PCR demonstrated that the novel 1525-1delG impairs exon 10 s…
Enhanced tonic GABAA inhibition in typical absence epilepsy
2009
The cellular mechanisms underlying typical absence seizures, which characterize various idiopathic generalized epilepsies, are not fully understood, but impaired γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic inhibition remains an attractive hypothesis. In contrast, we show here that extrasynaptic GABAA receptor–dependent 'tonic' inhibition is increased in thalamocortical neurons from diverse genetic and pharmacological models of absence seizures. Increased tonic inhibition is due to compromised GABA uptake by the GABA transporter GAT-1 in the genetic models tested, and GAT-1 is crucial in governing seizure genesis. Extrasynaptic GABAA receptors are a requirement for seizures in two of the best character…
Leisure-Time Physical Activity Reduces the Risk of Long-Term Sickness Absence Among Older Healthy Female Eldercare Workers
2021
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the association between leisure-time physical activity (PA) and risk of long-term sickness absence (LTSA). Design: Data on LTSA (≥3 consecutive weeks during a 1-year follow-up) were acquired from the Danish Register for Evaluation of Marginalization and linked to a questionnaire via personal identification number. Setting: Eldercare workers from 36 Danish municipalities. Subjects: Data were retrieved from 4605 healthy Danish female eldercare (i.e., workers assisting senior citizens with daily activities and health) aged 19 to 69 years, who answered a questionnaire on health, and work environment in 2005. Measures: Calculated risk of LTSA and its associat…
Evidence on the effectiveness of occupational health interventions.
2006
Background At present there exists no overview of the range of evidence currently available regarding the effectiveness of occupational health interventions (OHI). Methods Articles published in 2000 and 2001 in 16 general and specialized biomedical journals were searched for evaluations of OHI studies. Results Out of 8,687 articles searched there were 148 OHI studies. In 21% of the studies the study design was a randomized controlled trial, in 28% it was a controlled trial, an interrupted time-series in 7% and a different design in 44%. The occupational health outcomewasexposurein27%ofthestudies,workerbehaviorin12%,diseasesymptomsin 30%, disability or sickness absence in 24%, injuries in 4%…
Girl With Partial Turner Syndrome and Absence Epilepsy
2007
This report describes a 16-year-old girl with short stature (-5 standard deviations), normal puberty, panic attacks, absence epilepsy, some stigmata of Turner syndrome, and a Madelung deformity. Routine chromosomal analysis revealed a female karyotype with one abnormal chromosome X, with the suspicion of additional material on the short arm. With fluorescent in situ hybridization and array-multiplex amplifiable probe hybridization methodology, a complex aberration was detected, with a deletion of the distal part of Xp22.33 (including the short-stature homeobox gene) and a duplication of Xp22.32-p22.12 proximal to the deleted segment. The deletion in our patient involves the Xp22.33 region. …
Brain protein expression changes in WAG/Rij rats, a genetic rat model of absence epilepsy after peripheral lipopolysaccharide treatment
2013
Peripheral injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) facilitates 8–10 Hz spike-wave discharges (SWD) characterizing absence epilepsy in WAG/Rij rats. It is unknown however, whether peripherally administered LPS is able to alter the generator areas of epileptic activity at the molecular level. We injected 1 mg/kg dose of LPS intraperitoneally into WAG/Rij rats, recorded the body temperature and EEG, and examined the protein expression changes of the proteome 12 h after injection in the fronto-parietal cortex and thalamus. We used fluorescent two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis to investigate the expression profile. We found 16 differentially expressed proteins in the front…
