A kink that makes you sick : The effect of sick pay on absence
2018
We exploit a regression kink design to estimate the elasticity of the duration of sickness absence with respect to replacement rate. Elasticity is a central parameter in defining the optimal social insurance scheme compensating for lost earnings due to sickness. We use comprehensive administrative data and a kink in the policy rule near the median earnings. We find a statistically significant estimate of the elasticity of the order of one. peerReviewed
Mediating role of job satisfaction, affective well-being and health in the relationship between indoor environment and absenteeism: work patterns mat…
2018
BACKGROUND: Office workers spend long hours in their workplace, and these environments impact their well-being and performance. This relationship can involve different mediation chains. The degree of complexity of this relationship can vary depending on different types of office work (work patterns) employees carry out. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between indoor environment and absenteeism, and the mediating role of job satisfaction, affective well-being, and health, in different work patterns. METHOD: 1306 office workers from different European countries were classified into work patterns depending on: task complexity and interactivity. RESULTS: Job satisfaction, affective well-…
Comparative morphological characteristics of three Brettanomyces bruxellensis wine strains in the presence/absence of sulfur dioxide
2016
International audience; The red wine spoilage yeast Brettanomyces bruxellensis has been the subject of numerous investigations. Some of these studies focused on spoilage mechanisms, sulfur dioxide tolerance and nutrient requirements. Pseudomycelium formation, although a striking feature of this species, has however been poorly investigated. Furthermore, literature regarding the induction mechanism of pseudomycelium formation in this yeast is limited and lacks clarity, as results published are contradictory. This study elucidates this phenomenon among strains from geographically different areas. Potential environmental cues were investigated, to attain a better understanding of this mechanis…
The effects of using participatory working time scheduling software on sickness absence: A difference-in-differences study.
2020
Abstract Background Participatory working time scheduling is a collaborative approach to scheduling shift work. As a potential way of improving work time control, it may provide a means to reducing sickness absence in shift work. So far, experimental and quasi-experimental studies on the effects of increased work time control on sickness absence are lacking. Objective To investigate the effects of using digital participatory working time scheduling software on ward-level sickness absence among Finnish hospital employees. Participants and methods This quasi-experimental study compared the amount of sickness absence in hospital wards using a participatory working time scheduling software (n=1…
De participació local. Una proposta metodològica desde la investigació-acció-participativa
2018
Citizen participation is an increasingly prevalent term in our society. In the process of deployment in the municipal area, progressively local corporations make efforts to innovate practices and develop experiences of citizen participation in defining policies and public affairs, and allocating budgets. While innovation has been advanced with regard to the tools and mechanisms to be used to promote participation, many of the initiatives and experiences have focused more on the implementation of the vote than in the different social processes inherent in the participation. Moreover, we are faced with the absence of a methodological guide that allows approaching a project or strategic plan o…
Time pressure, working time control and long-term sickness absence
2015
Objectives Perceived time pressure at work has increased in most European countries during recent decades. Time pressure may be harmful for employees’ health and well-being. The aim of this register-based follow-up study is to investigate whether the effects of time pressure on long sickness absence vary by the level of working time control. Methods The data are taken from the Finnish Quality of Work Life Survey 2003 (n=3400), a representative sample of Finnish employees, combined with a register-based follow-up from Statistics Finland covering the years 2002–2006. In the 2003 survey, employees were asked about their perceived time pressure and to what extent they had control over working t…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
2013
In a context of high rate of obesity, understanding early formation of child eating behaviour, in qualitative and quantitative terms, is crucial. This work shows that new vegetable acceptance is positively associated with the introduction of variety since the beginning of the complementary feeding, and would be more difficult in 2 year old children. Moreover, the liking of a new food (vegetable or beverage) increases after familiarisation by repeated exposure. A transitional association between the new food and calories induces more stable liking than repeated exposure. However, a high energy density could limit intake of the new food by learned satiation. This result supports an ability of…
Psychosocial work factors and sickness absence in 31 countries in Europe
2013
International audience; Background: The studies on the associations between psychosocial work factors and sickness absence have rarely included a large number of factors and European data. The objective was to examine the associations between a large set of psychosocial work factors following well-known and emergent concepts and sickness absence in Europe. Methods: The study population consisted of 14 881 male and 14 799 female workers in 31 countries from the 2005 European Working Conditions Survey. Psychosocial work factors included the following: decision latitude, psychological demands, social support, physical violence, sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, long working hours, s…
