Nanofibrous Polymeric Membranes for Air Filtration Application: A Review of Progress after the COVID‐19 Pandemic
2023
Air pollution is one of the major global problems causing around 7 million dead per year. In fact, a connection between infectious disease transmission, including COVID-19, and air pollution has been proved: COVID-19 consequences on human health are found to be more severe in areas characterized by high levels of particulate matter (PM). Therefore, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the production of air filtration devices with high filtration efficiency has gained more and more attention. Herein, a review of the post-COVID-19 pandemic progress in nanofibrous polymeric membranes for air filtration is provided. First, a brief discussion on the different types of filtration mechanism and the key pa…

The influence of sludge retention time on mixed culture microbial fuel cell start-ups
2017
Abstract In this work, the start-ups of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) seeds with conventional activated sludge cultivated at different solid retention times (SRTs) are compared. A clear influence of the SRT of the inoculum was observed, corresponding to an SRT of 10 days to the higher current density exerted, about 0.2 A m −2 . This observation points out that, in this type of electrochemical device, it is recommended to use high SRT seeds. The work also points out that in order to promote an efficient start-up, it is not only necessary to use high SRT seeds, but also to feed a high COD concentration. When feeding 10,000 ppm COD and keeping SRT of 10 d differences of current densi…
Optimization of the performance of an air–cathode MFC by changing solid retention time
2017
BACKGROUND This work is focused on the optimization of the performances of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFC) by changing the solid retention time (SRT) of the suspended biomass culture. RESULTS Five MFCs inoculated with activated sludge obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant were fed with a highly-concentrated acetate solution (10 000 ppm COD) and operated over two-month tests in order to determine how SRT may influence the performances of the bio-electrogenic cells. The MFC operated at SRTs of 2.5 days was found to outperform the other cells, operated at SRT of 1.4, 5.0, 7.4 and 10.0 days. In order to evaluate the possibility of using SRT as a manipulated parameter for t…
Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Air Emissions Comparison of Alternative and Conventional Bus Fleets in Vietnam
2022
The study (a) assesses the life cycle energy consumption and air emissions impacts of battery electric buses (e-buses) and conventional buses operated in Vietnam, and (b) compares them with those of hydrogen buses. The results indicate that e-buses and hydrogen buses are preferred options compared to conventional buses in terms of energy consumption, GHG emissions and other air quality impacts over their whole life cycle. Life cycle energy consumption of diesel buses is triple that of e-buses, and is significantly higher than that of hydrogen buses. Replacing conventional buses with e-buses can reduce energy consumption by 50%. For GHG emissions and air quality impacts, the adoption of elec…
How do airlines preferences about engines influence the competition in the commercial aircraft industry: an empirical analysis
2011
This paper examines the competitive context in the commercial aircraft industry. In particular, the aim of the research here presented is to understand what are the main drivers influencing the choice of a specific engine manufacturer in an aircraft, and how such preferences influence the competition between Airbus and Boeing. In order to do that, we have collected data about the fleet composition of the top 25 airlines and we have located the main drivers influencing the engine configuration in: route specialization, business model and maintenance policy. Implications of such empirical findings in the competition among aircraft manufacturers are finally discussed.
Development of an IoT Environmental Monitoring Application with a Novel Middleware for Resource Constrained Devices
2014
In this paper the development of a Mobile Health monitoring system is described. The system combines user location data with air quality information provided by a heterogeneous sensing infrastructure providing users with advises about their daily exposure to air pollutants. The highly dynamic integration of different kind of nodes, mostly characterized by rather constrained resources, of this application is crucial to implement the Internet of Things vision, and requires powerful and effective programming methodologies to abstract implementation of high-level distributed processing from hardware dependencies. We then describe our programming methodology and our novel middleware supporting d…
The beginning of the Neolithic in Southern Italy and Sicily
2018
Abstract The process of Neolithization of Southern Italy and Sicily covers about 500 years (6200–5700 cal BC) and involves two cultural horizons: Archaic Impressed Ware or “Impresse Arcaiche” and Advanced Impressed Ware or “Impresse Evolute”. In Southern Italy the Neolithic peopling from the East is characterized by a “package” of plenty domesticated plants and livestock; in Sicily the adoption of the new economical system is apparently more slow and with no evidences of ruptures between the Mesolithic groups and first farmers. In this paper we present the chronological and cultural framework of the sixth millennium BC within the area of investigation, with an up-to-date bibliography about …
Kalenarte 2014.
The essay is dedicated to the 2014 edition of Kalenarte, entitled "The art of the landsc…
