Sensor Properties of Pristine and Functionalized Carbon Nanohorns

Nanodispersions of pristine single-wall carbon nanohorns (i.e., p-SWCNHs) and oxidized-SWCNHs (i.e.; o-SWCNHs) were used to modify screen printed electrode (SPE). p-SWCNHs and o-SWCNHs were fully characterized by using several analytical techniques, as: HR-TEM (High Resolution-Transmission Electron Microscopy), FE-SEM/EDX (Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. High pressure processing of carrot juice: Effect of static and multi-pulsed pressure on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductases activity and colour.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the influence of static and multi-pulsed hydrostatic pressure processing (HPP) treatments on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductase activity, colour, and browning index of carrot juice. Phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans and other polyphenols were the predominant polyphenols detected with Triple-TOF-LC-MS/MS. The highest concentration of ferulic acid, didymin, dihydro-p-coumaric acid, sesaminol and matairesinol isomers were found among all the compounds detected. Effect of high-pressure processing on carotenoids profile, colour, microbial and enzymatic stability of cloudy carrot juice

Abstract The objective of this work was to assess the impact of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the carotenoid profile, colour as well as the microbial and enzymatic stability of cloudy carrot juice. The predominant carotenoids in the fresh juices were by far the provitamin A carotenoids β-carotene and α-carotene. Others were ζ-carotene, phytofluene, phytoene and lutein. HPP at 300 MPa in three cycles caused the highest carotenoids degradation (41%) whereas the lowest degradation (26%) was achieved at 600 MPa. Direct determination of intracellular daunorubicin in intact confluent monolayers of AT1 prostate carcinoma cells using a multiwell–multilabel counter

The cytostatic drug daunorubicin exerts its toxic action by intercalating into the DNA. The efficacy of daunorubicin depends on the intracellular amount in the tumor cell. Here we have evaluated the use of a multiwell-multilabel reader for the direct determination of the fluorescent cytostatic drug daunorubicin in a prostate carcinoma cell line (AT1 R-3327 Dunning prostate carcinoma cells) grown on 24-well plates. We present evidence that this simple fluorescent parameter is a good measure for the toxicologically relevant amount of the drug intercalated into the DNA and, therefore, is a good predictor for the drug's cytotoxicity. Many vegetable extracts, essential oils, and their main constituents are active on the Central Nervous System (CNS). In fact, they have been used as sedatives, hypnotics, or tranquilizers for their activity in treating CNS disorders. In this research, we studied the possible activities of Lavandula angustifolia (LA) essential oil and of its main constituent, linalool, as anti-stress compounds on anxiety and social interaction and their in vitro effects on proteins (pERK and PKA) involved in the transmission of the signal. Retention of aroma compounds in starch matrices: competitions between aroma compounds toward amylose and amylopectin

International audience; The retention of three aroma compounds-isoamyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, and linalool--from starch-containing model food matrices was measured by headspace analysis, under equilibrium conditions. We studied systems containing standard or waxy corn starch with one or two aroma compounds. The three studied aroma compounds interact differently: ethyl hexanoate and linalool form complexes with amylose, and isoamyl acetate cannot. However, in systems containing one aroma compound, we observed with both starches a significant retention of the three molecules. In food matrices, where starch is often used as a gelling or texturing agent, the occurrence of amylose-aroma complexes and their effect on the release of aroma compounds are difficult to determine.
