Metal-organic frameworks conjugated with biomolecules as efficient platforms for development of biosensors

2021

Abstract Recent developments in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have renewed the interests of scientists to bring about a major breakthrough in this field soon. These particles consist of ultra-highly porous and tremendous internal surface areas with extraordinary variabilities that make them highly potent compounds in nanomedicine. Moreover, low weight, large free volumes, and multiple functionalities of these particles have made them extremely attractive for various applications. Along with a critical role in the adsorption and separation of different analytes, they also have an immense role in the development of biosensor platforms that are expected to pave the way for accur…

Aptamer-based assay of biomolecules: Recent advances in electro-analytical approach

2017

Electrochemical aptasensors, which are based on the specificity of aptamer-target recognition, with electrochemical transduction for analytical purposes have received particular attention due to their high sensitivity and selectivity, simple instrumentation, as well as low production cost. This review summarizes advances from 2009 to January 2017 in the development of electrochemical aptasensors for biological molecules, including small molecules, nucleic acids, and proteins. Various aptasensing strategies are assessed according to their potential for reaching relevant limits of sensitivity, specificity, and degrees of multiplexing. Furthermore, we address the remaining challenges and oppor…

Analysis of amino acids using serially coupled columns.

2017

Single conventional columns in reversed-phase LC are insufficient for analysing the isoindoles of primary amino acids, due to their limited functionality. An interesting possibility for increasing the separation power is the combination of several columns of different nature, where the length is modified by coupling small segments. This approach may require a considerable investment to have multiple lengths for each stationary phase. However, the combination of only two columns of fixed length can be enough to resolve satisfactorily relatively complex mixtures, provided that an optimised gradient program is applied. In this work, a mixture of 19 primary amino acid isoindoles found in protei…

Abstract. Further development and optimisation of a previously described ion trap aerosol mass spectrometer (IT-AMS) are presented, which resulted in more reproducible and robust operation and allowed for the instrument's first field deployment. Results from this 11-day-long measurement indicate that the instrument is capable of providing quantitative information on organics, nitrate, and sulfate mass concentrations with reasonable detection limits (0.5–1.4 µg m−3 for 1 h averages) and that results obtained with the IT-AMS can directly be related to those from Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers. The capability of the IT-AMS to elucidate the structure of fragment ions is demonstrated via an…

Modifying the reactivity of copper (II) by its encapsulation into polydimethylsiloxane: A selective sensor for ephedrine-like compounds

2018

This paper demonstrates that the reactivity of copper (II) can be modified through its entrappment in a polymeric matrix of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which makes possible the reaction into the support instead of in solution. Amino-containing compounds such as amino acids, proteins and sugars, which react with Cu (II) in solution, do not react inside the polymer. As a prove of concept, a highly specific Cu (II) PDMS-based sensor for ephedrines has been developed in this work. When the sensors are put into contact with solutions of these drugs under basic conditions, a change in their color from pale green to purple is observed. This change enables the visual identification of ephedrine (E…

Host-guest interactions for extracting antibiotics with a γ-cyclodextrin poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) hybrid sorbent

2021

Abstract A procedure for the solid-phase extraction of antibiotics (enoxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and sparfloxacin) in water has been developed. The sorbent used is based on a poly(glycidyl-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) network, whose previously modified surface has been functionalized with γ-cyclodextrin through a click-chemistry reaction. The architecture of the material has been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption, Raman spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, showing good capability to be used as a filler for extraction cartridges. The optimization of the extraction methodology shows good intra-day and inter…

Electrotechnologies, microwaves, and ultrasounds combined with binary mixtures of ethanol and water to extract steviol glycosides and antioxidant com…

2017

The aim of this work was to investigate the potential use of non-conventional technologies (microwaves, ultrasounds, pulsed electric fields, and high voltage electrical discharges) to enhance the extraction of high-added value compounds (mainly stevioside and rebaudioside A), and antioxidants (total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, chlorophylls, and carotenoids), from Stevia rebaudiana leaves. After treatment at equivalent energy, a supplementary diffusion was performed until 1 h. Results demonstrated that when water (100%) was used as solvent, the maximum recovery of stevioside (50.8 ± 0.1 mg/g) was obtained after ultrasound-assisted extraction, while microwave allowed the highest yields of…

Recent Applications of Carbonaceous Nanosorbents in Solid Phase Extraction for the Determination of Pesticides in Food Samples

2018

This article covers recent trends of carbonaceous nanomaterial supported solid phase extraction for the liquid and gas chromatography analysis of pesticides in food samples. Several advanced carbonaceous nanosorbents have been reported over the previous decade for pesticide extraction, such as graphene derivatives modified by combination with silica, amines, polymers, and/or magnetic nanoparticles. The advances in this field have opened possibilities for using neat or modified carbon nanotubes or graphene-type sorbents for the pre-concentration of polar or nonpolar pesticides by solid phase extraction (SPE) or micro-SPE methods or to apply such nanomaterials for the removal of matrix compon…

Modern trends in solid phase extraction: New sorbent media

2016

Abstract Based on the recently published literature, this review provides an update of the most important features and application of formats and devices employed in solid phase extraction (SPE). Special attention was paid on new trapping media proposed in SPE prior the chromatography analysis, based on the use of nanostructured materials, including carbon nanomaterials, electrospun nanofibers, dendrimes and magnetic nanoparticles, molecular recognition sorbents, as aptamers, immunosorbents, molecular imprinted polymers, ion imprinting polymers, metal-organic frameworks and restricted access materials. Discussions on the present limitations as well as expected future trends of the new trapp…

Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in environmental analysis: Focus on organic matter and microplastic

2020

Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) has great potential within environmental analysis. This technique is mainly used for the chemical identification of macromolecules that cannot be characterized by either liquid or gas chromatography due to their big size. Through pyrolysis (controlled thermal degradation), these macromolecules are broken down into simpler molecules that can be separated by gas chromatography and detected by mass spectrometry. This technique has been traditionally used in environmental samples for the characterization of organic matter and humic substances, contaminants, lignins, etc. It attains the identification of the different types of chemical un…
