Diagnostic and prognostic value of CD10 in peripheral nerve sheath tumors

Background: Neurofibromas are sporadic or associated with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1), with a higher risk of malignant progression. Materials and Methods: We investigated CD10 immunoexpression in 39 peripheral nerve sheath lesions. They were 18 typical, solitary, sporadic neurofibromas (group A) and 21 cases (group B) consisting of 11 NF1-associated cases, 3 malignant peripheral sheath tumors (MPNST) and 8 atypical neurofibromas. Results: CD10 immunopositivity was absent or very weak and focal in group A. On the contrary, CD10 was strongly expressed in group B, including all the MPNST and their metastases, with 95% sensitivity and 72% specificity in distinguishing between the two groups.…

OBJECTIVES: Positivity of both immunoglobulin A anti-tissue transglutaminase (TTG) and anti-endomysium antibodies (EMA) has a positive predictive value of nearly 100% for celiac disease (CD). The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether patients of any age, with high pretest probability of CD and high titre of anti-TTG and EMA positivity, have a high probability of intestinal damage and may not require the biopsy for final diagnosis. Liver disease in chelated transfusion-dependent thalassemics: the role of iron overload and chronic hepatitis C.

Abstract Iron overload and hepatitis virus C infection cause liver fibrosis in thalassemics. In a monocentric retrospective analysis of liver disease in a cohort of 191 transfusion-dependent thalassemics, in 126 patients who had undergone liver biopsy (mean age 17.2 years; 58 hepatitis virus C-RNA positive and 68 hepatitis virus C-RNA negative) the liver iron concentration (median 2.4 mg/gr dry liver weight) was closely related to serum ferritin levels (R = 0.58; p<0.0001). Analysis of Ki-Ras mutations in stage I rectal carcinomas and respective regional lymph nodes.

In this work we show that the percentage of Ki-RAS mutations in codons 12 and 13 in rectal cancer are sensibly lower than in colon cancer, providing further evidence that these two kinds of tumors should be considered two different entities. Moreover, we show that the detection in regional lymph nodes of the same mutation of primary tumor might represent an indicator of lymph nodes metastasis in rectal carcinoma not detected in routine histologic examination.

T Cell Large Granular Lymphocytic Leukemia in Association with Sjögren’s Syndrome

T cell large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia is a rare condition accounting for 2–3% of all mature lymphoid leukemias. Here, we present the case of a 73-year-old woman presenting with neutropenia and anemia (hemoglobin 9.9 g/dl). Hematological assessment revealed the presence of a T cell LGL leukemia. At the time of T cell LGL leukemia diagnosis, the patient developed xerophthalmia and xerostomia, and a diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome was made following salivary gland biopsy.
