This introduction suggests regarding ‘religion’ as a cultural product. The relationship between religion and memory can be investigated through the practice of oath-taking, a particularly sophisticated social tool in ancient Greece. It concerns, in fact, both the status of social trust and problematic intercourses between gods and human beings, who fi nd in oath a regulated and effective space of interrelation.

Il primato della vista e quello dell’udito nella Grecia Antica

Tra i cinque sensi, la vista e l’udito, secondo i Greci, hanno uno statuto particolare perché risultano i più adatti a produrre conoscenza. Per tutta una tradizione di pensiero, poi, tra i due, è la vista, in quanto senso attivo, a detenere il primato rispetto al passivo e ‘femmineo’ udito. Ma esiste anche una linea culturale che rileva l’elemento di superiorità dell’udito sulla vista: il fatto di permettere una conoscenza cumulativa all’interno di un orizzonte spaziale e temporale più ampio, e di vincolare gli individui socialmente.
