Seaweed fails to prevent ocean acidification impact on foraminifera along a shallow-water CO2 gradient

Ocean acidification causes biodiversity loss, alters ecosystems, and may impact food security, as shells of small organisms dissolve easily in corrosive waters. There is a suggestion that photosynthetic organisms could mitigate ocean acidification on a local scale, through seagrass protection or seaweed cultivation, as net ecosystem organic production raises the saturation state of calcium carbonate making seawater less corrosive. The application of AI techniques in the optimal design of multi-pass cold drawing processes

Abstract In the paper the problem of optimal pass schedule design in multi-pass wire drawing process is investigated. An automatic design procedure based on an effective artificial intelligence (AI) technique, namely simulated annealing (SA), is proposed. The developed algorithm is aimed to achieve a satisfactory balance of the drawing stresses on the material along the reduction sequence, maintaining in the meantime the drawing stress at each pass below a safety value. Integrating Cross-Dominance Adaptation in Multi-objective Memetic Algorithms

This chapter proposes a novel adaptive memetic approach for solving multi-objective optimization problems. The proposed approach introduces the novel concept of crossdominance and employs this concept within a novel probabilistic scheme which makes use of the Wigner distribution for performing coordination of the local search. Thus, two local searchers are integrated within an evolutionary framework which resorts to an evolutionary algorithm previously proposed in literature for solving multi-objective problems. These two local searchers are a multi-objective version of simulated annealing and a novel multi-objective implementation of the Rosenbrock algorithm.

Sputtered cuprous oxide thin films and nitrogen doping by ion implantation

Abstract The structural, optical and electrical properties of sputtered cuprous oxide thin films have been optimized through post-deposition thermal treatments. Moreover we have studied the effects of nitrogen doping introduced by ion implantation followed by the optimized oxidant thermal annealing. Three concentrations have been used, 0.6 N%, 1.2 N%, and 2.5 N%. Along with the preservation of the Cu 2 O phase, a slight optical band gap narrowing and a significant conductivity enhancement has been observed with respect to the undoped samples. An enhanced memetic differential evolution in filter design for defect detection in paper production.

This article proposes an Enhanced Memetic Differential Evolution (EMDE) for designing digital filters which aim at detecting defects of the paper produced during an industrial process. Defect detection is handled by means of two Gabor filters and their design is performed by the EMDE. The EMDE is a novel adaptive evolutionary algorithm which combines the powerful explorative features of Differential Evolution with the exploitative features of three local search algorithms employing different pivot rules and neighborhood generating functions. A parallel simulated annealing approach to the K shortest loopless paths problem

The k shortest loopless paths problem is a significant combinatorial problem which arises in many contexts. When the size of the networks is very large the exact algorithms fail to find the best solution in a reasonable time. The aim of this paper is to suggest parallel efficient algorithms to obtain a good approximation of the solution to the k shortest loopless paths problem between two arbitrary nodes, when the network size is large. The heuristic used is known in literature as Simulated Annealing. Preliminary tests have been conducted for evaluating the validity of the proposed algorithms. The quality of the obtained results represents a significant base for further experimentations.

Expansion of a quantum gas released from an optical lattice

We analyze the interference pattern produced by ultracold atoms released from an optical lattice. Such interference patterns are commonly interpreted as the momentum distributions of the trapped quantum gas. We show that for finite time-of-flights the resulting density distribution can, however, be significantly altered, similar to a near-field diffraction regime in optics. We illustrate our findings with a simple model and realistic quantum Monte Carlo simulations for bosonic atoms, and compare the latter to experiments.

The Deterministic Annealing Filter: A new clustering method for gamma-ray tracking algorithms

A new method of clustering for forward-tracking algorithms has been developed to reconstruct the tracks of gamma-rays in high-resolution detector systems such as AGATA (Advanced GAmma Tracking Array). This technique, called Deterministic Annealing Filter (DAF), comes from statistical physics and is used in high-energy physics.
