Welcome to MTI—A New Open Access Journal Dealing with Blue Sky Research and Future Trends in Multimodal Technologies and Interaction
2016
In this era of massive use of computers and other computational devices (e.g., low-cost wearable sensors, smartphones, other smart devices, etc.), the nature of digital data is becoming more complex and heterogeneous.
Analysis of Offshore Knuckle Boom Crane - Part One: Modeling and Parameter Identification
2013
This paper presents an extensive model of a knuckle boom crane used for pipe handling on offshore drilling rigs. The mechanical system is modeled as a multi-body system and includes the structural flexibility and damping. The motion control system model includes the main components of the crane's electro-hydraulic actuation system. For this a novel black-box model for counterbalance valves is presented, which uses two different pressure ratios to compute the flow through the valve. Experimental data and parameter identification, based on both numerical optimization and manual tuning, are used to verify the crane model. The demonstrated modeling and parameter identification techniques target…
Simple equipment to measure biomechanical quantities of muscles and organs which includes a polarity-programmable peak detector
1982
Biomechanical measurements of muscles and organs require appropriate measuring equipment. As far as the static properties are concerned, the excursion of the bender bar of stress should be without force. The bender bar of force, however, ideally should not elongate under load. Because natural frequency is the most important boundary condition, the bender bar should be developed with this in mind. The developed bars imposed an insignificant preload to the muscle or to the organ. The small changes in resistance occurring in the resistance strain gauges affixed to the bars require the use of a highly stable amplifier. A new amplifier was accordingly developed based on the principle of an instr…

Experimental investigations and numerical modelling of the melting process in the cold crucible
2005
PurposeAims to present recent activities in experimental investigations and numerical modelling of the induction cold crucible installation.Design/methodology/approachTemperature and velocity measurements using thermocouples and electromagnetic velocity probes were performed in aluminium melt which was used as a model melt. Measured temperature field and flow pattern were compared with transient 3D calculations based on large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence modelling scheme. Numerical results are in good coincidence with the experimental data.FindingsThe modelling results show that only 3D transient LES is able to model correctly these heat and mass transfer processes.Originality/valueIt i…
UMTS radio networks
2006
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the contributions to the UMTS radio network planning, with the optimization being provided from COST 273 and the real-time tuning, which is related to RRM. The results on UTRAN performance evaluation by the means of simulation tools are also discussed. The UMTS planning includes processes like: the propagation and traffic models, the aspects of parameter planning, and the automatic planning algorithms. An accurate ray-tracing model integrated in a UMTS-capable planning tool allows the radio network planner to reach optimal numbers for the BS deployment and configuration while meeting the service level requirements. Ray tracing can identify the problem …
Dynamic characterization for the dielectric electroactive polymer fundamental sheet
2012
Published version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-012-4423-6 A study into the appropriateness of characterizing the dynamics of the dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) fundamental sheet has been performed. Whereby a model describing the dynamics of the DEAP fundamental sheet is developed, parameters of the models are determined using experimental/simulation results, and verification has been conducted to determine the precision of the dynamic model. The precision for the DEAP sheet-obtained dynamic model could not be verified unless some parameters c…
Data gathering and mathematical modelling for pitch stabilisation of a high speed catamaran
2011
This paper deals with the data gathering phase for a 21-foot long planing catamaran. The boat experiences a take-off phenomenon at high speed which needs to be countered. An overview of stability problems in high speed hydroplanes is described with possible solutions recommended. A subsequent gathering of data using laser scanning and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the boat are described. The paper ends with a look at the initial developments of stabilising systems for the boat.
An expert system for vineyard management based upon ubiquitous network technologies
2011
Vineyard operations for quality wines production are currently based upon costly and time-consuming manual sampling operations required to assess the maturity phases of grapevines. The ripening process however is significantly influenced by the environmental parameters which nowadays can be effectively monitored by means of ubiquitous computing technologies. Besides the possibility of gathering data, hence, suitable tools are required to support the vineyard management process. The present research concerns the development of an expert system to effectively manage the vineyard operations. The methodology is based on the analysis of the time series of indices related to the maturation phases…
A Compensation Based Method to Model PV Nodes in Backward/Forward Distribution Network Analysis
2007
PurposeThis paper proposes to identify a new model of the fixed voltage nodes (PV nodes) for medium voltage distribution systems analysis. The model is used within backward/forward (b/f) analysis method applied to solve radial and weakly meshed systems.Design/methodology/approachThe model is based on the compensation currents method for multi‐port systems which has been extensively used, within b/f analysis methods, to take into account the presence of meshes and PV nodes.FindingsTest results prove the approach to be more efficient and precise than previous methodologies and put into evidence the good performance of the proposed model in terms of speed and convergence properties.Research li…
