Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ R n and in metric spaces

2016

We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity estimates, and also demonstrate that whether an end point of an exponent set is attained or not is important. As a consequence of our estimates we obtain, for instance, criteria for points to have zero (resp. positive) capacity. Our discussion holds in rather general metric spaces, including Carnot groups and many manifolds, but it is just as relevant on weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ . Indeed, to illustrate the sharpness of our estimates, we give several examples of …

Pointwise characterizations of Hardy-Sobolev functions

2006

We establish simple pointwise characterizations of functions in the Hardy-Sobolev spaces within the range n/(n+1)<p <=1. In addition, classical Hardy inequalities are extended to the case p <= 1.

Adjoint-based inversion for porosity in shallow reservoirs using pseudo-transient solvers for non-linear hydro-mechanical processes

2020

Abstract Porous flow is of major importance in the shallow subsurface, since it directly impacts on reservoir-scale processes such as waste fluid sequestration or oil and gas exploration. Coupled and non-linear hydro-mechanical processes describe the motion of a low-viscous fluid interacting with a higher viscous porous rock matrix. This two-phase flow may trigger the initiation of solitary waves of porosity, further developing into vertical high-porosity pipes or chimneys. These preferred fluid escape features may lead to localised and fast vertical flow pathways potentially problematic in the case of for instance CO2 sequestration. Constraining the porosity and the non-linearly related pe…

Impact of Industrial SMEs in the Environment Conservation : A Systematic Mapping Study

2020

Small and medium-sized companies have an impact on the environment where they operate. In some cases, the effects on the environment can be significant within local communities leading to a series of negative processes, such as emission pollution into the atmosphere, the discharges to rivers and seas, the production of waste; in some cases, it makes the contamination to the soil. This paper presents the results of the systematic mapping study aimed at assessing environmental management in industrial SMEs. Descriptive studies of SMEs emphasize their poor environmental commitment, describing them as primarily interested in controlling pollutant emissions just to comply with regulations. Ninet…

Antimicrobial additives for poly(lactic acid) materials and their applications: current state and perspectives

2018

Poly(lactic acid)-based antimicrobial materials received considerable attention as promising systems to control microbial growth. The remarkable physicochemical properties of PLA such as renewability, biodegradability, and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for clinical use open up interesting perspectives for application in food packaging and biomedical materials. Nowadays, there is an increasing consumer demands for fresh, high-quality, and natural foods packaged with environmentally friendly materials that prolong the shelf life. The incorporation of antimicrobial agents into PLA-based polymers is likely to lead to the next generation of packaging materials. The development o…

Non-consistent cell-average multiresolution operators with application to image processing

2016

In recent years different techniques to process signal and image have been designed and developed. In particular, multiresolution representations of data have been studied and used successfully for several applications such as compression, denoising or inpainting. A general framework about multiresolution representation has been presented by Harten (1996) 20. Harten's schemes are based on two operators: decimation, D , and prediction, P , that satisfy the consistency property D P = I , where I is the identity operator. Recently, some new classes of multiresolution operators have been designed using learning statistical tools and weighted local polynomial regression methods obtaining filters…

A new constructive method using the theory of invariants to obtain material behavior laws

2006

International audience; The aim of this paper is to present a constructive method to derive mechanical behavior laws using the Theory of Invariants and Continuum Thermodynamics. More precisely, we want to construct, in a general way, the state or dissipation potential in a polynomial form given a set of variables V and the material symmetry group S. For this purpose, we show how to obtain a set of generators for the S-invariant polynomials of V. Then, using the Grœbner basis concept, we write all the decompositions of a polynomial of a given degree.

Darboux Linearization and Isochronous Centers with a Rational First Integral

1997

Abstract In this paper we study isochronous centers of polynomial systems. It is known that a center is isochronous if and only if it is linearizable. We introduce the notion of Darboux linearizability of a center and give an effective criterion for verifying Darboux linearizability. If a center is Darboux linearizable, the method produces a linearizing change of coordinates. Most of the known polynomial isochronous centers are Darboux linearizable. Moreover, using this criterion we find a new two-parameter family of cubic isochronous centers and give the linearizing changes of coordinates for centers belonging to that family. We also determine all Hamiltonian cubic systems which are Darbou…

Locally tame plane polynomial automorphisms

2010

Abstract For automorphisms of a polynomial ring in two variables over a domain R , we show that local tameness implies global tameness provided that every 2-generated locally free R -module of rank 1 is free. We give examples illustrating this property.
