Il bugnato a punta di diamante in Sicilia tra XV e XVI secolo
2009
Diamond shaped bosses in 15th and 16th century in Sicily Diamond shaped bosses are to be found in many Sicilian buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, whether as a means of covering extensive surfaces or, not less significantly, as a decorative element in doorways, windows and niches inside the spandrels supporting domes, both in religious and civil architecture. This study takes into account certain stylistic and constructive aspects in a number of buildings, such as the shape and dimension of the pieces, the way they are placed, the materials employed; these details, together with the dates of construction, make it possible to observe differences and similarities, and (especia…
La committenza dei Barresi nel castello di Pietraperzia: la trasformazione della fabbrica in palazzo residenziale nel primo Cinquecento
2009
The essay reconstructs the history of the castle of Pietraperzia -now reduced to a state of ruin - between the second half of fifteenth and the first half of the sixteenth centuries. Over that period it was tranformed from a medieval fortress to a luxurious residence, home to a cultured and sophisticated court. Supported by new archival documents, the author highlights the role of the aristocratic patrons, the Barresi of Pietraperzia and, in particular, that of two key figures, Giovanni Antonio II and his son, Matteo. Simultaneously the author offers a hypotetical reconstruction of the 16 century appearance and configuration of the building. This was the most significant and lasting epoch i…
Toward Self-Aware Robots
2018
Despite major progress in Robotics and AI, robots are still basically “zombies” repeatedly achieving actions and tasks without understanding what they are doing. Deep-Learning AI programs classify tremendous amounts of data without grasping the meaning of their inputs or outputs. We still lack a genuine theory of the underlying principles and methods that would enable robots to understand their environment, to be cognizant of what they do, to take appropriate and timely initiatives, to learn from their own experience and to show that they know that they have learned and how. The rationale of this paper is that the understanding of its environment by an agent (the agent itself and its effect…
From Familiar to Uncanny. Aesthetics of Atmospheres in Domestic Spaces
2019
The notion of “familiar” has recently become crucial in the debate generated by Everyday Aesthetics. In this essay I will explore this concept following Arto Haapala and Yuriko Saito’s theories, then I will investigate the notion of familiar – and some antonym notions (i.e. strange, uncanny, alien) – while embracing a phenomenological approach. Referring to German phenomenologist Gernot Böhme's theory of atmospheres, my paper shall compare a notion of a glass house, theorized by Modernism, and a notion of a shell house, seen from different perspectives by Walter Benjamin, Gaston Bachelard and Juhani Pallasmaa. I will finally draw attention to the notion of strange as possibly degenerating i…
Katsaus kokonaisarkkitehtuurin määritelmiin ja potentiaalisiin hyötyihin
2017
Emotions toward cognitive enhancement technologies and the body – Attitudes and willingness to use
2020
While technological development is becoming more integrated into our surrounding environments, it is also moving closer towards the human body. In fact, numerous examples can be seen in which information technology (IT) is being designed not just for use on the body, but also inside it. Technologies dominating this domain can be described as ‘cognitive enhancement technologies’ (CETs). These technologies are intended to enhance people's cognitive capabilities, and can be viewed in the forms of implants, lens, drugs, and then moving outward, smart clothing, watches and physical environments to name some. The present study focused on measuring peoples’ (N=104) emotions towards and willingness…
Nouvelle Méthode di Jean-Jacques Lequeu. Ridisegno, analisi grafica e rilettura critica
2021
A Cognitive Architecture for Robotic Hand Posture Learning
2005
This paper deals with the design and implementation of a visual control of a robotic system composed of a dexterous hand and video camera. The aim of the proposed system is to reproduce the movements of a human hand in order to learn complex manipulation tasks or to interact with the user. A novel algorithm for robust and fast fingertips localization and tracking is presented. A suitable kinematic hand model is adopted to achieve a fast and acceptable solution to an inverse kinematics problem. The system is part of a cognitive architecture for posture learning that integrates the perceptions by a high-level representation of the scene and of the observed actions. The anthropomorphic robotic…
Sentience and the Origins of Consciousness: From Cartesian Duality to Markovian Monism
2020
This essay addresses Cartesian duality and how its implicit dialectic might be repaired using physics and information theory. Our agenda is to describe a key distinction in the physical sciences that may provide a foundation for the distinction between mind and matter, and between sentient and intentional systems. From this perspective, it becomes tenable to talk about the physics of sentience and &lsquo
Information Systems Architecture and Technology: Proceedings of 38th International Conference on Information Systems Architecture and Technology – IS…
2018
This three-volume set of books presents advances in the development of concepts and techniques in the area of new technologies and contemporary information system architectures. It guides readers through solving specific research and analytical problems to obtain useful knowledge and business value from the data. Each chapter provides an analysis of a specific technical problem, followed by the numerical analysis, simulation and implementation of the solution to the problem. The books constitute the refereed proceedings of the 2017 38th International Conference “Information Systems Architecture and Technology,” or ISAT 2017, held on September 17–19, 2017 in Szklarska Poręba, Poland. The con…
