Giant hepatocellular adenoma as cause of severe abdominal pain: a case report

2007

Abstract The authors describe the case of a large hepatocellular adenoma diagnosed in a 30-year old woman who came to us complaining of acute pain in the upper abdominal quadrants. The patient had been taking an oral contraceptive pill for the last ten years. We present the clinical features, the diagnostic work-up and the treatment prescribed.

A context-aware approach for long-term behavioural change detection and abnormality prediction in ambient assisted living

2015

This research aims to describe pattern recognition models for detecting behavioural and health-related changes in a patient who is monitored continuously in an assisted living environment. The early anticipation of anomalies can improve the rate of disease prevention. Here we present different learning techniques for predicting abnormalities and behavioural trends in various user contexts. In this paper we described a Hidden Markov Model based approach for detecting abnormalities in daily activities, a process of identifying irregularity in routine behaviours from statistical histories and an exponential smoothing technique to predict future changes in various vital signs. The outcomes of t…

Cervical pregnancy in assisted reproduction: an analysis of risk factors in 91,067 ongoing pregnancies

2019

Abstract Research question What is the frequency of cervical pregnancy in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and what are the risk factors? Design Case-control study of women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) at 25 private assisted reproduction clinics run by the same group in Spain. Two control groups (tubal ectopic pregnancies and intrauterine pregnancies) were established. The main outcome measure was frequency of cervical pregnancy. Demographic, clinical factors and IVF parameters were assessed for their influence on cervical pregnancy risk. Results Thirty-two clinical pregnancies were achieved out of 91,067 ongoing pregnancies, yielding a rate of …

Quantitative methylation analysis of developmentally important genes in human pregnancy losses after ART and spontaneous conception.

2009

To study possible effects of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on epigenetic reprogramming, we have analyzed the DNA methylation levels of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) of seven imprinted genes (H19, MEG3, LIT1, MEST, NESP55, PEG3 and SNRPN) as well as the promoter regions of the pluripotency gene NANOG and the tumor suppressor gene APC in chorionic villus samples (CVS) of 42 spontaneous miscarriages and stillbirths after ART and 29 abortions/stillbirths after spontaneous conception. We did not find an increased rate of faulty methylation patterns after ART, but significant and trend differences (ROC curve analysis, Wilcoxon test) in the methylation levels of LIT1 (P = 0.0…

Obesity and poor reproductive outcome: the potential role of the endometrium

2007

Objective To analyze the potential role of extraovarian factors such as endometrium in the reproductive outcome of obese patients. Design Retrospective study. Setting University-affiliated infertility clinic, between January 2001 and July 2005. Patient(s) Women undergoing a total of 2656 first ovum donation (OD) cycles with good quality embryos. Intervention(s) The oocyte donors underwent controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, and recipients received a well-established hormonal replacement therapy for endometrial preparation. In vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was performed according to semen characteristics. All first cycles (n = 2656) of ovum donation us…

MAGIC-5: an Italian mammographic database of digitised images for research

2008

The implementation of a database of digitised mammograms is discussed. The digitised images were collected beginning in 1999 by a community of physicists in collaboration with radiologists in several Italian hospitals as a first step in developing and implementing a computer-aided detection (CAD) system. All 3,369 mammograms were collected from 967 patients and classified according to lesion type and morphology, breast tissue and pathology type. A dedicated graphical user interface was developed to visualise and process mammograms to support the medical diagnosis directly on a high-resolution screen. The database has been the starting point for developing other medical imaging applications,…

Diagnostic genetic screening for assisted reproductive technologies patients with macrozoospermia

2017

International audience; Macrozoospermia is characterized by a high proportion of abnormal spermatozoa with enlarged heads. So far, it has been associated with mutations only in the Aurora Kinase C gene (AURKC) in some cases. Although many publications have reported failure to conceive in couples with macrozoospermia, a few others have described successful pregnancies, thus raising questions as to whether ICSI and AURKC genetic screening should be recommended in all patients with macrozoospermia. First, we report on two monozygotic twins presenting macrozoospermia for whom the genetic status was explored (Aurora Kinase C sequencing) and whole semen and gradient-selected spermatozoa were anal…

TUMORS OF THE LATERAL AND THIRD VENTRICLE

2005

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Intraventricular tumors usually are managed by approaches and microsurgical techniques that need retraction and dissection of important brain structures. Minimally invasive endoscopic procedures achieve a remarkable alternative to conventional microneurosurgical techniques. Endoscope-assisted microneurosurgery may be a minimally invasive technique with maximally effective treatment. Using the keyhole concept for planning the surgical strategy, the reduction of the brain retraction is achieved, which is one of the main benefits of this technique. METHODS: We treated 35 patients (16 female patients and 19 male patients) with tumors in the lateral (n = 8) and the third (n =…

Primordial Prevention of High Blood Pressure in Childhood

2020

Hypertension is a condition with increased risk for subsequent adverse events, and treatment of hypertension is prescribed for primary prevention of adverse events. Primordial prevention is a concept that precedes primary prevention and focuses on risk factor prevention. Primordial prevention of hypertension consists of strategies to maintain blood pressure in a normal range and prevent development of elevated blood pressure or hypertension. Childhood is a period in which primordial prevention could be effective and if sustained throughout childhood could contribute to a healthier young adulthood. Targets for primordial prevention in childhood include preventing and reducing childhood obesi…
