This study focused on the battlements of the Tower of Palazzo Alliata Pietratagliata in Palermo, which is one of the most important examples of late medieval civil architecture in Sicily. The battlements are made by biocalcarenite and currently affected by a strong desegregation. Activin A circulating levels in patients with bone metastasis from breast or prostate cancer

Recent studies have highlighted that Activin A, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily, may be involved in the regulation of osteoblastic activity and in osteoclast differentiation. Therefore, we have investigated the clinical significance of its circulating levels in patients with bone metastasis. Periodontal changes during chronic benign granulocytopenia in childhood. A case report.

The report describes two children with chronic benign granulocytopenia, suffering from gingivitis and marginal periodontitis in the deciduous dentition. The radicular areas of the attached gingiva were well delineated against the alveolar and papillary mucosa.

Benign familial infantile epilepsy associated with KCNQ3 mutation: a rare occurrence or an underestimated event?

Abstract Benign familial infantile epilepsy (BFIE) is the most genetically heterogeneous phenotype among early-onset familial infantile epilepsies. It has an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with incomplete penetrance. Although PRRT2 is the most mutated gene detected in families with BFIE, other mutations in KCNQ2, SCN2A, and GABRA6 genes have also been described. To date, KCNQ3 mutations have been detected in only four patients with BFIE. A novel mutation in KCNQ3-related benign familial neonatal epilepsy: electroclinical features and neurodevelopmental outcome.

Benign familial neonatal epilepsy (BFNE) is caused, in about 5% of families, by mutations in the KCNQ3 gene encoding voltage-gated potassium channel subunits. Usually, newborns with BFNE show a normal neurological outcome, but recently, refractory seizures and/or developmental disability have been reported suggesting phenotype variability associated with KCNQ3-related BFNE. Value of nude mice xenografts in the expression of cell heterogeneity of human sarcomas of bone and soft tissue.

Summary Nude mice xenotransplants have been performed on human primary sarcomas of bone and soft tissues in order to delve into the cell heterogeneity of these neoplasms. Particular emphasis has been given to the group of small round blue cell sarcomas (Ewing's sarcomas and peripheral neuroectodermal tumors). Out of 31 xenotransplanted sarcomas, 16 cases have grown positively, and many of them continue to be transferred into nude mice on a regular time basis, being presently considered as fully established nude lines.
