Orbitally dependent kinetic exchange in cobalt(II) pairs: origin of the magnetic anisotropy

2003

Abstract A comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic exchange between Co 2+ ions is reported. Using the microscopic background we deduce the general Hamiltonian for a corner-shared bioctahedral system involving kinetic exchange, spin–orbit coupling and low-symmetry local crystal field. This Hamiltonian acting within orbitally degenerate ground manifold 4 ( T 1g ) A ⊗ 4 ( T 1g ) B of the cobalt pair is expressed in terms of orbital and spin operators. We elucidate the major electronic factors controlling the exchange anisotropy in the Co(II) pairs. The degree of the magnetic anisotropy is shown to depend on the strength of the cubic crystal field and on the relative efficiency of two k…

Landscape-scale Spatial Distribution of the Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus feldeggii) Breeding Population in Italy

2008

Falco biarmicus feldeggii is one of the most threatened taxa in Europe. Its global population is estimated at a few hundred pairs unequally scattered in a vast and fragmented area stretching from Sicily to the Caspian Sea. Most recent counts showed that Italy hosts a large part (>25%) of the whole population. Consequently, Italian authorities promoted a national action plan. In this framework, we carried out the first national survey for the Lanner Falcon in Italy (2003-2004). Our study area covered the whole breeding range, i.e., Sicily and the Italian peninsula (n = 2909 cells 10 × 10 km). When possible, we considered also additional information from previous regional investigations (1993…

Media Effects on Positive and Negative Learning

2017

While educational science in the past mainly focused on students’ formal or intentional learning from courses, textbooks, or online tutorials in university contexts, communication science usually deals with ordinary citizens’ informal or unintentional learning from the mass media in everyday life. One of the general aims of the PLATO project is to bring these research traditions together. Therefore, this paper sums up research on media effects on positive and negative learning recently conducted; our studies show that media coverage is often biased and news media, therefore, contribute to negative as well as positive learning. Which kind of learning occurs, heavily depends on the way inform…

Irrigation water intensity and climate variability: an agricultural crops analysis of Italian regions

2020

This paper examines the relationship between the requirement of water resources for irrigation and climate variability and analyses the ranking of the best and worst performance of irrigation water intensity for each Italian region. To measure water resources demanded by agriculture, the irrigation water intensity (IWI) indicator has been computed as the ratio between volumes of irrigation water and total crop harvested. By applying panel data methodologies to a regional dataset spanning from 2000 to 2009, we may address heterogeneity and omitted variable issues. By merging meteo-climatic with agricultural variables, we may confirm that water precipitations, maximum temperature, irrigation …

Comparative Molecular Evolution of Primary (Buchnera) and Secondary Symbionts of Aphids Based on Two Protein-Coding Genes

2001

A+T content, phylogenetic relationships, codon usage, evolutionary rates, and ratio of synonymous versus non-synonymous substitutions have been studied in partial sequences of the atpD and aroQ/pheA genes of primary ( Buchnera) and secondary symbionts of aphids and a set of selected non-symbiotic bacteria, belonging to the five subdivisions of the Proteobacteria. Compared to the homologous genes of the last group, both genes belonging to Buchnera behave in a similar way, showing a higher A+T content, forming a monophyletic group, a loss in codon bias, especially in third base position, an evolutionary acceleration and an increase in the number of non-synonymous substitutions, confirming pre…

Cloning and sequencing of the dnaK region of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2)

1993

Abstract The dnaK homologue of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) strain M145 has been cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence analysis of a 2.5-kb region revealed an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a predicted DnaK protein of 618 amino acids (Mr = 66 274). The dnaK coding sequence displays extreme codon bias and shows a strong preference for CGY and GGY, for Arg and Gly codons, respectively. The predicted DnaK sequence has a high Lys:Arg ratio which is not typical of streptomycete proteins. The region immediately downstream from dnaK contains an ORF for a GrpE-like protein; the predicted start codon of grpE overlaps the last two codons of dnaK, indicating that the two genes are translationa…

Biases in study design, implementation, and data analysis that distort the appraisal of clinical benefit and ESMO-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale…

2021

BACKGROUND: The European Society for Medical Oncology-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale (ESMO-MCBS) is a validated, widely used tool developed to score the clinical benefit from cancer medicines reported in clinical trials. ESMO-MCBS scores assume valid research methodologies and quality trial implementation. Studies incorporating flawed design, implementation, or data analysis may generate outcomes that exaggerate true benefit and are not generalisable. Failure to either indicate or penalise studies with bias undermines the intention and diminishes the integrity of ESMO-MCBS scores. This review aimed to evaluate the adequacy of the ESMO-MCBS to address bias generated by flawed design, im…

The short-term efficacy and safety of artificial total disc replacement for selected patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease compared with ant…

2018

PurposeTo systematically compare the efficacy and safety of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) with the efficacy and safety of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for the treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDDD).MethodsThe electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched for the period from the establishment of the databases to March 2018. The peer-reviewed articles that investigate the safety and efficacy of TDR and ALIF were retrieved under the given search terms. Quality assessment must be done independently by two authors according to each item of criterion. The statistical analyses were performed using RevMan (version 5.3) and Stata (v…
