In vivo modulation of Bacillus thuringiensis (commercial form) on Holothuria tubulosa immune defense mechanisms
2010
In invertebrates, cellular and humoral components are evolved to maintain their homeostais and integrity. Both these components respond to different non-self such as microorganisms, vertebrate erythrocytes and foreign proteins. The aim of this research was to study the possible modulating effects of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in a commercial and vegetative form on the immune response of the echinoderm, sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa. Bt is one of the most used biopesticides worldwide, covering the 90% of the organic market. Sicily is a region vocated to biological control and agricultural area are often closed to the coastal area. Investigate the effect of biopesticides on other non targ…
Eco-physiological response of two marine bivalves to acute exposition to commercial Bt-based pesticide
2013
Microbial products based on the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are among the most common biopesticides used worldwide to suppress insect pests in forests, horticulture and agricultural crops. Some of the effects of commercial Bt have been recorded for terrestrial and freshwater non-target organisms but little research is available on marine fauna. Nevertheless, due to the contiguity of agro-ecosystems and coastal habitats, marine fauna may be highly influenced by this control method. We studied the effect of a commercial Bt product on the physiological and ecological responses and the energy budget of two of the most frequent marine intertidal bivalves in the Mediter…
I BACINI SIN-OROGENICI AL TETTO DELLA CATENA SICILIANA EVOLUZIONE TRA IL SERRAVALLIANO SUPERIORE E IL MESSINIANO INFERIORE
2014

Shigella sonnei biotype g carrying class 2 integrons in southern Italy: a retrospective typing study by pulsed field gel electrophoresis
2006
Abstract Background Emergence and global dissemination of multiresistant strains of enteric pathogens is a very concerning problem from both epidemiological and Public Health points of view. Shigella sonnei is the serogroup of Shigella most frequently responsible for sporadic and epidemic enteritis in developed countries. The dissemination is associated most often to human to human transmission, but foodborne episodes have also been described. In recent years the circulation of multiresistant strains of S. sonnei biotype g carrying a class 2 integron has been reported in many countries worldwide. In southern Italy a strain with similar properties has been responsible for a large community o…
Genetic relatedness among isolates of Shigella sonnei carrying class 2 integrons in Tehran, Iran, 2002–2003
2007
Abstract Background Shigella spp. are major cause of diarrhoeal disease in both developing and developed countries. Shigella sonnei is the serogroup of Shigella most frequently responsible for sporadic and epidemic enteritis in developed countries. In recent years the emergence and spread of S. sonnei biotype g carrying class 2 integron have been frequently reported in many countries. Recently, S. sonnei has been reported as the prevalent serogroup of Shigella in Iran. The present study was carried out to investigate phenotypic and genetic characteristics of Shigella sonnei isolates identified in the years 2002 and 2003 in Tehran, Iran. Methods Biotyping, drug susceptibility testing, pulsed…
Study of Bacillus subtilis spore's : characterication of stuctures implied in its resistance
2013
The bacterial spore is a multilayer microbial form which is extremely resistant to environmental perturbations. This resistance is especially due to its unique structure which is particularly compact and weakly permeable. This work aims to identify and characterize the spore structures involved in these properties. Overall investigation methods, such as NMR and fluorescence anisotropy, have shown that the cortex of Bacillus subtilis spores is modified by temperature for level similar to that of the activation of germination. This will result in changes to the access to the inner membrane. A tool at the spore’s scale, the fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) in conjunction with th…
TBVAC2020: Advancing Tuberculosis Vaccines from Discovery to Clinical Development
2017
International audience; TBVAC2020 is a research project supported by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission (EC). It aims at the discovery and development of novel tuberculosis (TB) vaccines from preclinical research projects to early clinical assessment. The project builds on previous collaborations from 1998 onwards funded through the EC framework programs FP5, FP6, and FP7. It has succeeded in attracting new partners from outstanding laboratories from all over the world, now totaling 40 institutions. Next to the development of novel vaccines, TB biomarker development is also considered an important asset to facilitate rational vaccine selection and development. In addition, …
