Epidemiology and Pattern of Resistance of Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolated from Blood Samples in Hospitalized Patients: A Single Center Retrospective …
2021
Background: Blood culturing remains the mainstream tool to inform an appropriate treatment in hospital-acquired bloodstream infections and to diagnose any bacteremia. Methods: A retrospective investigation on the prevalence of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) and their resistance in hospitalized patients by age, sex, and units from blood cultures (BCs) was conducted from January 2018 to April 2020 at Sant’Elia hospital, Caltanissetta, southern Italy. We divided the patient age range into four equal intervals. Results: Multivariate demographic and microbiological variables did not show an association between bacteria distributions and gender and age. The distribution by units showed a higher pre…
Pierwsza nowoczesna retrotopia? "Don Kichote" Miguela de Cervantesa w perspektywie późnego Zygmunta Baumana
2022
The article considers Cervantes's classical work through the prism of retrotopia, as understood in late Bauman. Retrotopia is a double negation of utopia, an attempt to return to an imaginary past, which usually happens in the face of an uncertain future. The first part of the article indicates a clear analogy between the conceptualization of retrotopia and Don Quixote's key themes. These include the issue of nostalgia for times past, the problem ofviolence, ora return to tribal thinking in terms o f”us” versus "them.” The second part o f the text briefly examines Don Quixote as an expression of retrotopian longing for an imaginary past o f a Golden Age, an idyllic era of justice and humanis…
Polyketide Derivatives from Mangrove Derived Endophytic Fungus Pseudopestalotiopsis theae
2020
Chemical investigation of secondary metabolites from the endophytic fungus Pseudopestalotiopsis theae led to the isolation of eighteen new polyketide derivatives, pestalotheols I&ndash
Induction of ambuic acid derivatives by the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis lespedezae through an OSMAC approach
2021
Abstract Ten new ambuic acid derivatives, pestallic acids H–Q including one new iodinated natural product along with two known compounds, ambuic acid and ambuic acid 18-acetate, were obtained through fermentation of the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis lespedezae on solid rice medium with 3.5% NaI. Pestallic acids H–Q were undetectable in cultures of the fungus grown on solid rice medium lacking NaI or in those where NaI had been replaced by NaCl or NaBr. The structures of the new metabolites were established on basis of 1D/2D NMR and HRESIMS data. Their absolute configurations were determined by Mosher’s method and TDDFT-ECD calculations. The compounds failed to show antibacterial activity…
Stratificazione ontologica e fluidità del reale
2013
The question of reality implies the necessity of declaring a principle of reality. Thus, it means the necessity of declaring a principle of existence. Through the adoption of a wide criterion like that of intentional existence following up on Quine’s accounts, the question is reformulated as a question concerning not what but how being is. Using Bauman’s concept of liquidity in an ontological manner and discussing Malabou’s notion of plasticity, the form as essence is seen in its possibility of being receptive and fluid and not ontologically static or stiff. Facing a stratified reality, we need to insert phenomenology and hermeneutics into metaphysics or rather rediscover the originary phen…
Didymellanosine, a new decahydrofluorene analogue, and ascolactone C from Didymella sp. IEA-3B.1, an endophyte of Terminalia catappa
2020
Didymellanosine (1), the first analogue of the decahydrofluorene-class of natural products bearing a 13-membered macrocyclic alkaloid conjugated with adenosine, and a new benzolactone derivative, ascolactone C (4) along with eight known compounds (2, 3, 5–10), were isolated from a solid rice fermentation of the endophytic fungus Didymella sp. IEA-3B.1 derived from the host plant Terminalia catappa. In addition, ascochitamine (11) was obtained when (NH4)2SO4 was added to rice medium and is reported here for the first time as a natural product. Didymellanosine (1) displayed strong activity against the murine lymphoma cell line L5178Y, Burkitt's lymphoma B cells (Ramos) and adult lymphoblastic…
An Interview with Zygmunt Bauman: How to Turn the Word into Flesh
2017
Deceased in January this year, the Polish-British sociologist Zygmunt Bauman has left an extremely rich scholarly legacy. In one of his last academic interviews, he refers to the key issues which had been the subject of his in-depth analysis for many years. Bauman starts with reflections on the gap between political authority and power. Next, given his long-standing research into ‘liquid modernity’, he focuses on the vitality of capitalism, which has now adopted a lighter, consumer form. Another thread of the interview is Bauman’s own research attitude, which he refers to as ‘sociological hermeneutics’. It is characterized by his reluctance to use any ‘-isms’ and a profound mistrust of all…
Healthcare associated pathogens in a changing world
2014
In developed countries about 10% of the hospitalizations are complicated by a healthcare-associated infection [1]. Up to 75% of these infections are due to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) [1]. Antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections are associated to higher morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs than those caused by susceptible organisms [1]. The findings of the point prevalence survey in European acute care hospitals published in 2013 by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) show large variations between countries and between different regions of the same country, with Italy being allocated within the high-endemic areas for both MRSA and MDROs [2]. Des…
Państwo opiekuńcze i przestrzeń publiczna w płynnej nowoczesności
2016
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie stanu państwa opiekuńczego i przestrzeni publicznej w epoce płynnej nowoczesności, omawianej w dziełach Zygmunta Baumana. Tekst rozpoczyna analiza zwrotu neoliberalnego w kontekście upłynniania się nowoczesnego świata. Neoliberalne myślenie zdominowało bowiem społeczne, polityczne, ekonomiczne i kulturowe aspekty życia.
