Purpose of review The medical treatment of children with non-neurogenic overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is still limited to a small number of drugs approved for use in childhood according to the national regulations of each country. We have reviewed the safety and tolerability of β3-adrenoceptor agonists, specifically mirabegron and solabegron, a newly emerging drug class for the treatment of the overactive bladder syndrome. We discuss them mechanistically in the context of expression and other preclinical data.Based on a systematic PubMed search, incidence of overall adverse events, hypertension, dry mouth, and constipation are comparable between mirabegron or solabegron and placebo. Hypertension is the most frequently observed adverse event, but has a similar incidence with mirabegron and placebo. Urinary incontinence is a major clinical problem and a significant cause of disability and dependency in older adults. Overall, the prevalence of urinary incontinence approaches 55% among women aged over 55 years. Long-term outcome after urinary diversion using the ileocecal segment in children and adolescents: Complications of the efferent segment.

Long-term outcomes are of special concern in children after urinary diversion. In a single institution study we evaluated retrospectively the long-term outcomes of urinary diversion in children, in whom the ileocecal segment had been used, in respect to complications of the efferent segment.The Mainz pouch was used in 107 children for continent urinary diversion. Indications were neurogenic bladder (53%, 57/107), exstrophy-epispadias complex (25%, 27/107), malignancy (13%, 14/107), and others (9%, 9/107). Radical Cystectomy - Often Too Late?

From 1967 to 1985, 246 cystectomies for treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were performed. Perioperative mortality decreased from 15% in the early years to 0% in 1985. Preoperative radiotherapy was not given. Patients who underwent cystectomy immediately following the diagnosis of invasive bladder carcinoma had a significantly better prognosis than those having cystectomy after recurrence of a transurethrally resected invasive carcinoma in spite of identical G and T criteria. Localization of the bradykinin B2 receptor in uterus, bladder and Madin-Darby canine kidney cells

Kinins are biologically active peptides that act through specific receptors, B1 and B2. Here we describe the localization of the bradykinin B2 receptor in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells and in the uterus and urinary bladder of rat or human origin. We discuss the suitability of anti-peptide antibodies to assess the tissue distribution of bradykinin B2 receptors.
