The focus of this article is the emergent and potential indications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Emergent applications of CEUS techniques include extravascular and intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound, quantitative assessment of microvascular circulation for tumor response assessment, and tumor characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). The aim of the study was to compare arterial and venous flow volume in the punctured leg in patients given a conventional pressure dressing and those given a new hemostatic puncture closure device (Angio-Seal) after cardiac catheterization. We prospectively measured blood flow in 25 patients with pressure dressing (group A) and 25 patients with Angio-Seal (group B) after cardiac catheterization. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of proinsulin C-peptide on erythrocyte Na(+),K(+)-ATPase and endothelial nitric oxide synthase activities in patients with type I diabetes. In a randomized double-blind study design, ten patients with type I diabetes received intravenous infusions of either human C-peptide or physiological saline on two different occasions. This study was prompted by the observation that decidual endothelial cells (DECs), unlike endothelial cells (ECs) of blood vessels in normal skin, kidney glomeruli and brain, express surface-bound C1q in physiologic pregnancy. This finding was unexpected, because deposits of C1q are usually observed in pathologic conditions and are associated with complement activation. In the case of DECs, we failed to detect immunoglobulins and C4 co-localized with C1q on the cell surface. Surprisingly, DECs expressed mRNA for the three chains of C1q and secreted detectable level of this component in serum-free medium. The weight of the brain amounts to only 2% of total body weight, but it receives 15% of the cardiac output and uses 20% of the oxygen consumed by the body. The energy supply is provided almost exclusively by glucose metabolism. The substrate for this is stored in the brain in the form of glucose or glycogen and is sufficient to cover the energy requirements for only about 1 min. Consequently, there is a delicate equilibrium between oxygen and nutrient supply from the blood and the energy requirements of the brain. Disturbances in neurologic function appear after a few seconds of ischemia, although they are not necessarily persistent at first.

The molecular pathways underlying the pathogenesis after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) are poorly understood and continue to be a matter of debate. A valid murine SAH injection model is not yet available but would be the prerequisite for further transgenic studies assessing the mechanisms following SAH.
