Muscle Free Fatty-Acid Uptake Associates to Mechanical Efficiency During Exercise in Humans
2018
Intrinsic factors related to muscle metabolism may explain the differences in mechanical efficiency (ME) during exercise. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between muscle metabolism and ME. Totally 17 healthy recreationally active male participants were recruited and divided into efficient (EF; n = 8) and inefficient (IE; n = 9) groups, which were matched for age (mean ± SD 24 ± 2 vs. 23 ± 2 years), BMI (23 ± 1 vs. 23 ± 2 kg m−2), physical activity levels (3.4 ± 1.0 vs. 4.1 ± 1.0 sessions/week), and V˙O2peak (53 ± 3 vs. 52 ± 3 mL kg−1 min−1), respectively, but differed for ME at 45% of V˙O2peak intensity during submaximal bicycle ergometer test (EF 20.5 ± 3.5 vs. I…

Therapeutic plasma exchange: Review of current indications
2019
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is the extracorporeal technique performed in an apheresis device were patient's plasma is separated from whole blood and removed, while the cellular blood components are returned to the patient together with a replacement fluid. By the extracorporeal removal of pathological substances and the replacement of deficient plasma components, it constitutes an important tool for the management of several disorders and it is a well-known and established treatment for numerous diseases. Additionally, overall available data confirm the safety and efficacy of TPE. Nevertheless, the quality of the evidence supporting the utility and efficacy of the procedure is diverse…
Substantial Reduction of Platelet Adhesion by Heparin-Coated Stents
2001
Although optimized antiplatelet medication has improved the clinical outcome after coronary stenting, vessel occlusion and restenosis still remain a relevant clinical problem. Platelets play a key role in this process. Therefore, the authors compared the platelet adhesion on different stent surface modifications (electropolished without coating or coated with carbon, carbon and additional heparin, silicon carbide, or heparin alone) to investigate their role in reducing platelet adhesion. All stents and additional stainless steel plates were incubated in heparinized whole blood with radiolabeled platelets. After washing the stents and plates four times, radioactivity caused by the adhesion o…
Influence of Vascular Load on Plasma Endothelin-1, Cytokines and Catecholamine Levels in Essential Hypertensives
1998
In vitro studies demonstrated a relationship between ET-1 and basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF), and of bFGF with Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF). The present study was carried out to investigate in vivo the behaviour after vascular stress of circulating ET-1, bFGF and PDGF, and catecholamines, and their relationship. In 12 healthy normotensives (NTs) and 15 essential hypertensives (Ehs) venous blood samples to determine circulating ET-1, bFGF and PDGF, and catecholamine (EPI and NE) levels were drawn before and at the third minute of a handgrip test. Blood pressures (BP) and heart rate were automatically recorded before starting, and at 1, 2, and 3 minutes during the test. The NT…
Comparison of platelet, leukocyte, and growth factor levels in point-of-care platelet-enriched plasma, prepared using a modified Curasan kit, with pr…
2003
Abstract The potential use of autologous thrombocytic growth factors to accelerate bone regeneration requires improved methods of isolating platelet-rich plasma (PRP). In addition to discontinuous cell separation, a second method by which PRP is produced at the point-of-care has now become available. In this study, growth factor levels in PRP from these two sources were compared. Whole blood was drawn from 115 healthy donors (73 males, 42 females) aged 21 - 62 years (mean 36, SD 10). The PRP was separated by the blood bank (BB) using the discontinuous cell separation method or at the 'point-of-care' by the so-called 'buffy coat' method (analogous to the Curasan PRP Kit). Growth factor conte…
Haemorheological components in the pre-geriatric and geriatric age range in a randomly selected Western Sicily population sample (Casteldaccia study)
1993
{Received 24.8.1992; accepted 7.12.1992} On a randomly selected western Sicily population sample (Casteldac cia Study: 600 subjects; 300 males and 300 females) of an age range from 40 to 79 years, were determined: Haematocrit (Htc) , blood vi scosity, plasma viscosity, filterability of whole blood and fibrinogen. Par ticipation was 97%, being 582 subjects (M = 287, F = 295). All the parameters measured showed a progressive increase with age and si gnificant differences were found between male and female subjects: Htc and blood viscosity were higher in male subjects (p < 0.01), while plasma viscosity, whole blood filterability and fibrinogen were higher in female subjects (p < 0.05). In …
Epidemiological, biological and clinical update on exercise-induced hemolysis
2019
Exercise-induced hemolysis can be conventionally defined as rupture and destruction of erythrocytes during physical exercise. The currently available epidemiologic information attests that a substantial degree of exercise-induced hemolysis is commonplace after short-, medium-, long- and ultra-long distance running, as reflected by significant decrease of serum or plasma haptoglobin and significant increase of plasma concentration (or overall blood content) of free hemoglobin. This paraphysiological intravascular hemolysis is typically mild (average variations of hemolysis biomarkers are usually comprised between 1.2- and 1.8-fold), almost self-limiting (completely resolving within 24-48 hou…
A new approach using high volume blood patch for prevention of post-dural puncture headache following intrathecal catheter pump exchange.
2015
Background: In an observational study, complications of intrathecal catheter pumps necessitating surgical exchange were analyzed. Also the use of a high-volume prophylactic epidural blood patch (EBP) during surgery for preventing post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) with a follow-up for 1 year is described. Materials and Methods: In 22 patients with refractory chronic pain of cancer/noncancer origin or severe spasticity, who were receiving intrathecal morphine including adjuvants or baclofen for symptom relief, catheter exchange with or without pump was performed. In patients with documented symptoms of PDPH following initial intrathecal catheter implantation, a prophylactic EBP with a high …
Respiratory Gas Transport in Blood during Pregnancy with Hemoglobin Concentrations Below 12g/100ml
1978
During pregnancy the conditions for respiratory gas transport in blood and respiratory gas exchange differ from that of non-pregnant healthy women. The hemoglobin concentration and, consequently, the O2 capacity of blood decreases. The arterial CO2 tension falls between the 10th and the 40th week of gestation to values of about 30 mmHg, while the pH of the arterial blood during the same period was found to be nearly constant at an elevated level (7). Investigations of blood O2 affinity during pregnancy led to non-uniform results. Several investigators found no significant change whereas others described a significant decrease of blood O2 affinity in pregnant women and a mean P50 value of ab…
