Some qualitative properties for the total variation flow

2002

We prove the existence of a finite extinction time for the solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the total variation flow. For the Neumann problem, we prove that the solutions reach the average of its initial datum in finite time. The asymptotic profile of the solutions of the Dirichlet problem is also studied. It is shown that the profiles are nonzero solutions of an eigenvalue-type problem that seems to be unexplored in the previous literature. The propagation of the support is analyzed in the radial case showing a behaviour entirely different to the case of the problem associated with the p-Laplacian operator. Finally, the study of the radially symmetric case allows us to point out othe…

We discuss existence theorems for shape optimization and material distribution problems. The conditions that we impose on the unknown sets are continuity of the boundary, respectively a certain measurability hypothesis. peerReviewed

Branches of index-preserving solutions to systems of second order ODEs

2009

We investigate the existence of a continuum of index-preserving solutions to a Dirichlet problem associated with a parameter-dependent system of second order ordinary differential equations, developing a detailed analysis on the behaviour of the branches of nontrivial solutions. Our approach is based on the Rabinowitz global bifurcation Theorem combined with the notion of index and nullity of suitable linear boundary value problems. An application of the result to the study of branches of odd, periodic solutions for suitable systems of two linearly coupled pendulums of lenghts variables is also analyzed.

Generalized dirichlet problem in nonlinear potential theory

1990

The operator extending the classical solution of the Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear elliptic equation divA(x,▽u)=0 akin to thep-Laplace equation is shown to be unique providedA obeys a specific order principle. The Keldych lemma is also generalized to this nonlinear setting.

Regularity of renormalized solutions to nonlinear elliptic equations away from the support of measure data

2018

We prove boundedness and continuity for solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the equation $$ - {\rm{div}}(a(x,\nabla u)) = h(x,u) + \mu ,\;\;\;\;\;{\rm{in}}\;{\rm{\Omega }} \subset \mathbb{R}^{N},$$ where the left-hand side is a Leray-Lions operator from $$- {W}^{1,p}_0(\Omega)$$ into W−1,p′(Ω) with 1 < p < N, h(x,s) is a Caratheodory function which grows like ∣s∣p−1 and μ is a finite Radon measure. We prove that renormalized solutions, though not globally bounded, are Holder-continuous far from the support of μ.

Existence of three solutions for a quasilinear two point boundary value problem

2002

In this paper we deal with the existence of at least three classical solutions for the following ordinary Dirichlet problem:¶¶ $ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} u'' + \lambda h(u')f(t,\:u) = 0\\ u(0) = u(1) = 0.\\\end{array}\right.\ $ ¶¶Our main tool is a recent three critical points theorem of B. Ricceri ([10]).

A Note on Riesz Bases of Eigenvectors of Certain Holomorphic Operator-Functions

2001

Abstract Operator-valued functions of the form A (λ) ≔ A − λ + Q(λ) with λ ↦ Q(λ)(A − μ)− 1 compact-valued and holomorphic on certain domains Ω ⊂  C are considered in separable Hilbert space. Assuming that the resolvent of A is compact, its eigenvalues are simple and the corresponding eigenvectors form a Riesz basis for H of finite defect, it is shown that under certain growth conditions on ‖Q(λ)(A − λ)− 1‖ the eigenvectors of A corresponding to a part of its spectrum also form a Riesz basis of finite defect. Applications are given to operator-valued functions of the form A (λ) = A − λ + B(λ − D)− 1C and to spectral problems in L2(0, 1) of the form −f″(x) + p(x, λ)f′(x) + q(x, λ)f(x) = λf(x…

Nonlinear diffusion in transparent media: the resolvent equation

2017

Abstract We consider the partial differential equation u - f = div ⁡ ( u m ⁢ ∇ ⁡ u | ∇ ⁡ u | ) u-f=\operatornamewithlimits{div}\biggl{(}u^{m}\frac{\nabla u}{|\nabla u|}% \biggr{)} with f nonnegative and bounded and m ∈ ℝ {m\in\mathbb{R}} . We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for both the Dirichlet problem (with bounded and nonnegative boundary datum) and the homogeneous Neumann problem. Solutions, which a priori belong to a space of truncated bounded variation functions, are shown to have zero jump part with respect to the ℋ N - 1 {{\mathcal{H}}^{N-1}} -Hausdorff measure. Results and proofs extend to more general nonlinearities.

Nonlinear Diffusion in Transparent Media

2021

Abstract We consider a prototypical nonlinear parabolic equation whose flux has three distinguished features: it is nonlinear with respect to both the unknown and its gradient, it is homogeneous, and it depends only on the direction of the gradient. For such equation, we obtain existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions to the Dirichlet problem, the homogeneous Neumann problem, and the Cauchy problem. Qualitative properties of solutions, such as finite speed of propagation and the occurrence of waiting-time phenomena, with sharp bounds, are shown. We also discuss the formation of jump discontinuities both at the boundary of the solutions’ support and in the bulk.
