The synergistic effect exerted by the HDAC inhibitor SAHA and the sesquiterpene lactone parthenolide on triple negative breast canc er cells

2014

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype o f breast cancer, insensitive to endocrine therapy. Chemotherapy is the main form of treatment, but is accompanied by a high rate of recidivism. The sesquiterpene lactone Parthenolide (PN) exerts a cy totoxic effect on MDA-MB231 cells, a TNBC cell line (1), but was ineffective at low doses (2-5μM). This repr esents an obstacle for a therapeutic utilization of PN. We supposed, in line with other authors (2), that PN c auses a protective response, which at low doses pre vails on the cytotoxic effect. With the aim of inhibiting this protective effect we have shown that pre-trea tment of MDA-MB231 cells with SAHA (2-5μM), an histone deace tylat…

Assessment of the importance of neutron multiplication for tritium production

2016

Abstract One of the major requirements for a fusion power plant in the future is tritium self-sufficiency. For this reason the scientific community has dedicated a lot of effort to research activity on reactor tritium breeding blankets. In the framework of the international project DEMO, many concepts of breeding blanket have been taken into account and some of them will be tested in the experimental reactor ITER by means of appropriate test blanket modules (TBMs). All the breeding blanket concepts rely on the adoption of binary systems composed of a material acting as neutronic multiplier and another as a breeder. This paper addresses a neutronic feature of these kinds of systems. In parti…

Data from: Parasitic wasp-associated symbiont affects plant-mediated species interactions between herbivores

2018

Microbial mutualistic symbiosis is increasingly recognised as a hidden driving force in the ecology of plant–insect interactions. Although plant‐associated and herbivore‐associated symbionts clearly affect interactions between plants and herbivores, the effects of symbionts associated with higher trophic levels has been largely overlooked. At the third‐trophic level, parasitic wasps are a common group of insects that can inject symbiotic viruses (polydnaviruses) and venom into their herbivorous hosts to support parasitoid offspring development. Here, we show that such third‐trophic level symbionts act in combination with venom to affect plant‐mediated interactions by reducing colonisation o…

The MARA-LEB ion transport system

2020

A low-energy branch is under development for the MARA vacuum-mode recoil separator at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. This development will allow for the study of proton-rich nuclei through laser ionisation spectroscopy and mass measurements. After stopping and extraction from a buffer gas cell, the ions of interest will be accelerated and transported to dedicated experimental setups by an ion transport system consisting of several focusing, accelerating and mass-separating elements. This article presents the current design and simulations for the ion transport. peerReviewed

Effect of farming system and cheese making technology on quality traits and fatty acid profile of Caciocavallo Palermitano cheese at different ripeni…

2011

The Caciocavallo Palermitano is a typical stretched curd cheese made from cow milk, mainly in the Western Sicily. The aim of this investigation was to verify the influence of farming system and cheese making process (traditional with wood tools and natural endemic flora vs. innovative with modern stainless steel tools and selected lactic bacteria) on qualitative characteristics, including fatty acid (FA) profile, of Caciocavallo Palermitano at different ripening time. Cheeses were obtained from bulk milk from two farms: one extensive rearing a local breed fed at pasture and one intensive rearing a specialized dairy breed fed mainly hay and concentrate. Milk and cheese properties and FA prof…

Video Recruitment : Online Perspectives and Implications for Employer Branding

2022

Video recruitment—the use of videos at any point in the recruitment process—has surged among organizations as a strategy for hiring talent and operating in their respective fields amid the pandemic. In particular, video interviews have become mainstream at the assessment stage of the recruitment funnel to keep hiring workers in a remote context of work. Among job video interviews, the asynchronous type especially raised interest and concerns online. This chapter offers a novel and essential approach to the study of video interviews through the theoretical exploration of the crossover between HRM, marketing, and information technology, with the goal of uncovering several ways that employer b…

Pulsed flow-through cultivation of Margaritifera margaritifera : effects of water source and food quantity on the survival and growth of juveniles

2020

AbstractConservation of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (FPM) includes artificially rearing juveniles, but the pulsed flow-through (PFT) method, enabling the continuous renewal of water and food in culture containers, has not been applied to FPM. This study tested the PFT method in culture of FPM juveniles, and the effect of water source (tap vs well water) and food concentration (mixture of commercial phytoplankton products) on the survival and growth of juveniles. Beaker-specific survival rates varied from 0 to 100% (mean: 34%) and from 0 to 58% (mean: 16%) in the 1st (2-week) and 2nd (10-week) experiment, respectively. In the 1st experiment, juveniles attained statistically signif…

Measuring territory student-attractiveness in Italy. Longitudinal evidence

2016

The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting university student mobility in Italy in a longitudinal perspective, by considering the flows across competing territorial areas supplying tertiary education programs. The Bradley-Terry modelling approach based on pair comparisons has been adopted to define the attractiveness of competing territories and a range of determinants related to the socio-economic characteristics of the areas as well as universities’ resources. Data released by the Italian Ministry of Education (MiUR) are analysed for the academic years 2010/2011-2014/2015. The modelling approach considers score values for each territory and year, allowing to evaluate wh…
