Maternal Motivation: Exploring the Roles of Prolactin and Pup Stimuli

Motherhood entails increased motivation for pups, which become strong reinforcers and guide maternal behaviours. This depends on steroids and lactogens acting on the brain of females during pregnancy and postpartum. Since virgin female mice exposed to pups are nearly spontaneously maternal, the specific roles of endocrine and pup-derived signals in the induction of maternal motivation remain unclear. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plasma levels of NT-pro-BNP, a natriuretic peptide precursor, are raised in the presence of fluid retention of cardiac origin and can be used as markers of cardiac dysfunction. Recent studies showed high levels of NT pro BNP in patients with cirrhosis. We assessed NT pro-BNP and other parameters of cardiac dysfunction in patients with cirrhosis, with or without ascites, in order to determine whether the behaviour of NT pro BNP is linked to the stage of liver disease or to secondary cardiac dysfunction. Brain-predicted age difference score is related to specific cognitive functions: A multi-site replication analysis

Abstract Brain-predicted age difference scores are calculated by subtracting chronological age from ‘brain’ age. Positive scores reflect accelerated ageing and are associated with increased mortality risk and poorer physical function. To date, however, the relationship between brain-predicted age difference scores and specific cognitive functions has not been systematically examined. International audience; In the light of studies published in the last ten years, we have suspected a differential influence of the sides of hemispheric cerebral lesions on posture and balance. A study was aimed at verifying this hypothesis, the method of which being original because many possible confounding factors such as age, sex as well as topography and size of the brain lesion have been taken into account in the statistical analysis. Toxicity of ligand-dependent Cre recombinases and generation of a conditional Cre deleter mouse allowing mosaic recombination in peripheral tissues.

Ligand-activated Cre recombinases are widely used for studying gene function in vitro and in conditional mouse models. To compare ligand-dependent Cre recombinases, different Cre estrogen receptor fusions were introduced into the ROSA26 locus of embryonic stem (ES) cells and assayed for genotoxicity and recombination efficiency. Of the tested recombinases, the CreERT2 variant showed no toxicity and was highly responsive to ligand induction. Loss of spatial learning in a patient with topographical disorientation in new environments

The case is described of a patient who, following cerebral hypoxia, developed severe difficulty in orienting himself in new environments in the context of a mild global amnesic syndrome. Some episodes he related suggested that his main difficulty was remembering the spatial/directional value of landmarks he recognised. A neuroradiological examination documented severe bilateral atrophy of the hippocampi associated with atrophic changes in the cerebral hemispheres, most marked in the dorsal regions. The present study was conducted to investigate the expression of serine/threonine-kinase 33 (Stk33) in neuronal structures of the central nervous system in rat and hamster as well as the presence of the protein in the brain of higher mammals, using a polyclonal antibody on cryosections of fixed brains. We found a distinct immunostaining pattern that included intense fluorescence of the ependymal lining of cerebral ventricles, and of hypothalamic tanycytes and their processes.
