Possible detection of the doubleβ+/electron-capture decay
1993
The two-neutrino double [beta] decay matrix elements of [sup 58]Ni, [sup 96]Ru, [sup 106]Cd, and [sup 136]Ce are calculated in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation and the corresponding double [beta][sup +]/electron-capture (EC) decay ([beta][sup +][beta][sup +]/[beta][sup +]EC/ECEC) half-lives are estimated. The calculated ground-state-to-ground-state half-lives range from 3.9[times]10[sup 23] to 6.4[times]10[sup 19] yr indicating that the double [beta][sup +]/EC decay could, in principle, be detected using currently known experimental techniques.
3D Data Acquisition and Numerical Analysis of a Footwear in Walking
2004
The aim of the paper is to set a procedure to study the load history of a footwear during a step with non-linear FE analysis. The geometric model tested was reconstructed from a real shoe by means of Reverse Engineering process, starting from dense point clouds acquired by non-contact scanning system. For each phase of the walk, the pressure values are obtained by a pressure distribution platform when tester is walking along the platform. The Finite Element model is easily generated by Hypermesh software using the CAD model. Ansys software is used to perform non-linear analyses. The procedure can be employed for improving the product performance in terms of durability, flexibility and comfo…
Cadmium-induced changes in soil biochemical characteristics of oat (Avena sativa L.) rhizosphere during early growth stages
2011
A microcosm was assembled to physically separate soil from roots and was used to study both the impact of living roots on the soil–plant system during early stages of growth and plant responses to abiotic stress. Oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings were grown in the microcosm unit for 44 days. Twenty-three days after planting, 0.154 mg CdSO4/g dry soil was added. Plants grown in Cd-treated microcosms showed considerable inhibition of shoot growth rates, and leaf chlorophyll content. Soil microbial biomass C and respiration increased with plant age, and most of the measured biochemical indicators decreased with increasing distance from the soil–root interface, thus demonstrating the rhizosphere …

PKM2 promotes Th17 cell differentiation and autoimmune inflammation by fine-tuning STAT3 activation
2019
Th17 cells undergo metabolic reprogramming towards glycolysis to support their differentiation and pathogenicity. Damasceno et al. report that PKM2, a glycolytic enzyme, plays a nonmetabolic role in mediating Th17 cell differentiation and autoimmune neuroinflammation by fine-tuning STAT3 activation.
Strategie di difesa attivate in risposta a stress, in embrioni di Paracentrotus lividus
2012
Sea urchin embryos are able to activate different defense strategies against stress. This model system allows to investigate numerous phenomena in multipotent cells, which interact among themselves, in their natural position, bypassing the disadvantages of isolated cells, deprived of their normal network. Cadmium (Cd) treatment triggers the accumulation of metal in embryonic cells and the activation of defense systems depending on concentration and exposure time, through the synthesis of heat shock proteins and/or the initiation of apoptosis. Here we show that Paracentrotus lividus embryos exposed to subacute/sublethal concentrations of Cd adopt autophagy as an additional stratagem to safeg…
Autophagy as defence strategy against cadmium stress in Paracentrotus lividus embryos.
2009
Sea urchin embryo is a developmental model that offers an excellent opportunity to investigate the possible adaptive response of cells exposed to different stress during differentiation. These embryos are able to respond to many stress by synthesizing a set of highly conserved proteins, the hsps and/or by activation of apoptosis. The exposure to cadmium trigger the accumulation of metal in embryo cells and the activation of both defence mechanisms depending on concentration and exposure time [1-4]. Recent experimental evidences demonstrate that by autophagy, a highly regulated mechanism that enhances cell survival under various environmental and cellular stress, the breakdown and recycling …
A possible role of autophagy for the execution of apoptosis in cadmium-exposed sea urchin embryos
2012
The sea urchin embryo is a suitable model system that offers an excellent opportunity to investigate different defence strategies activated in stress conditions. We previously showed that cadmium treatment provokes the accumulation of metal in dose- and time-dependent manner in embryonic cells and the activation of defence systems, such as the synthesis of HSPs and/or the initiation of apoptosis. Analysing autophagy, by neutral red, acridine orange and LC3-detection, we demonstrated that Cd-exposed embryos adopt this process as an additional stratagem to safeguard the developmental program. We observed that embryos treated with subletal Cd concentration activate a massive autophagic respons…
