A multi-disciplinary investigation of the "Tavolette fuori posto" of the "Hall of Barons" wooden ceiling of the "Steri" (Palermo, Italy)

Abstract Four painted slabs, called “Tavolette fuori posto” (Slabs out of place), of Galleria Interdisciplinare Regionale della Sicilia — Palazzo Abatellis (Palermo, Italy) were investigated with multi-techniques approach by using noninvasive and micro-destructive techniques. The slabs presumably belong to the decoration of the wooden ceiling of the “Hall of Barons” of the Palazzo Chiaramonte, said Steri, in Palermo (Italy). Cleaning is one of the most complex and delicate step in a restoration project, often due to the manufacturing techniques of the artifacts and their advanced state of decay. Eco-friendly solvents can permit to execute the cleaning operations with a reduced health impact for the restorers and for the environment. In this work, the performance of the 1,3- dioxolane/methylal (DIOX-MET) solvent mixture is evaluated over a wooden painted slab that had been covered with a thin layer of a protective varnish, probably during a previous conservation work performed in the Sixties. Il testo illustra gli esiti di una ricerca sulle matrici geometriche e costruttive del soffitto il legno che copre la navata centrale della Cappella Palatina di Palermo. Le diagnostic archéologique réalisé en amont de l'extension de la plateforme Delta 3 a permis de compléter et d'approfondir les connaissances concernant le territoire de Dourges. Les vestiges mis au jour couvrent plusieurs millénaires et concernent les périodes protohistoriques (âge du Bronze et Hallstatt) et historiques (de l'Antiquité jusqu'à l'époque moderne). Pour les périodes protohistoriques, il s'agit d'éléments épars qui ne semblent pas constituer à proprement parler un site. Il saggio affronta la componente araldica nella decorazione del soffitto dipinto della Sala Magna dello Steri di Palermo, raffrontando gli stemmi ancora esistenti con quelli descritti in due autorevoli fonti scritte secentesche. La seconda di queste, un manoscritto finora anonimo, viene adesso assegnata a Vincenzo Auria e datata ante 1668. The essay deals with the heraldic component in the decoration of the painted ceiling of the Sala Magna of the Steri in Palermo, comparing the still existing coats of arms with those described in two important 17th century written sources. The second of these, a manuscript until now anonymous, is now assigned to Vincenzo Auria and dated before 1668.

St. Peter’s Basilica inside the Royal Palace of Palermo, known as the Palatina Chapel, is one of the most popular medieval monuments in Sicily. Built between 1130 and 1163, it contains interesting wooden framings that represent both bearing and finishing structures. Studies about the Arab-Norman church have often concentrated on the very rich and suggestive decorative mosaic apparatus of walls and floorings, as well as the pictorial cycle of wooden ceilings.
