Aim: The present investigation was performed to study how type 1 diabetics responded to non-surgical periodontal treatment with and without adjunctive doxycycline. Method: Sixty diabetic type 1 patients (mean age 35.3 +/- 9 years) with moderate-to-severe periodontal disease were selected and divided into two groups of 30 patients each. Tumors associated with the VHL (von Hippel-Lindau) disease, such as hemangioblastomas and renal carcinomas and their sporadic counterparts, are cystic and well vascularized. Mutations of the VHL tumor-suppressor gene and elevated levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been described in these tumors. Objective: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is an effective treatment for occlusive hydrocephalus caused by an obstruction of the CSF flow in the aqueduct or the posterior fossa. We evaluated the factors age, pathology and surgical technique on the results of the ETV. Methods: Between November 1992 and October 2000 171 ETV have been performed in 159 patients. The follow-up was evaluated in 150 patients. The age ranged from 10 days to 77 years (mean age 35 years). Abstract Objectives Our protocol to manage the intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS). Methods Retrospective chart review of 7 consecutive patients managed for ILS. Results Five patients underwent surgical removal of the lesions and none experienced significant complications or recurrent disease. One patient refused surgical treatment and was closely followed by serial MRI scans with no signs of tumor growth. One patient is presently managed conservatively due to a good hearing. Conclusions Diagnosis of ILS is based on high resolution MRI scans and should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients investigated for cochleovestibular symptoms.
