A simplified predictive approach to assess the mechanical behavior of pinned hybrid composites aged in salt-fog environment

2020

Abstract Aim of this paper is to assess the predictive capabilities of a simplified theoretical approach on the failure load of aged pinned hybrid composites. In particular, the mechanical performances of glass-flax hybrid epoxy laminates exposed to salt spray fog environment, were used as input data in order to address the analytical model. Preliminarily, the relationship among mechanical performances, failure mechanisms, joint geometry and ageing time, was evaluated by double-lap joint tests on pinned samples at varying joint geometry and ageing time. The bearing and shear out limit stress of samples aged for 60 days under the salt-fog environment underwent a reduction of about 20% compar…

Effect of curing time on the performances of hybrid/mixed joints

2013

Abstract The aim of this work is the study of a mixed method used for the joining of aluminum alloys with glass reinforced polymer’s substrates (in the next GFRP). In particular, the technique of self-piercing riveting (in the next SPR) was applied on a co-cured joint in order to evaluate the influence of the time of inserting the rivet on the mechanical behavior of the mixed joints. Three different joints were realized: adhesive by co-curing technique, mechanical by self piercing riveting (in the next SPR) and a mixed one in which the joining techniques (i.e. adhesive and mechanical) were combined. In particular, to determine the optimum time to insert the rivet, three different times from…

Solution precursor plasma spray process as an alternative rapid one-step route for the development of hierarchical ZnO films for improved photocataly…

2018

Abstract The development of efficient photocatalytic hierarchical coral-like ZnO films via a relatively simple, efficient, rapid and single-step process is essential for industrial development. Herein, we report a novel method for directly synthesizing well-shaped ZnO nanorods (NRs) by Solution Precursor Plasma Spray (SPPS) process rather than conventional spherical/ellipsoidal particles. In the prepared ZnO-NRs films, the ZnO NRs display an average diameter of 190 nm, and exhibit a preferential orientation growth along (002) plane compared to a reference ZnO films (called ZnO-P) containing spherical/ellipsoidal particles. ZnO-NRs films exhibit relative narrower bandgap (3.02 eV) probably d…

Lignocellulosic fillers and graphene nanoplatelets as hybrid reinforcement for polylactic acid: Effect on mechanical properties and degradability

2020

Abstract This work investigates the effect of adding relatively low amounts of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to a biocomposite based on polylactic acid (PLA) and a lignocellulosic filler achieved by grinding Posidonia Oceanica leaves (Posidonia flour, PF). The ternary composites were prepared by melt extrusion and characterized from a morphological and mechanical point of view. Furthermore, hydrolytic degradation tests were performed under acidic, neutral and alkaline environment up to 900 h. Density measurements enabled to assess the degree of intraphase, i.e. the capability of polymer macromolecules to enter the voids of PF and a modified Halpin-Tsai model was presented and used to fit exp…

Differences and Similarities between the Isotypic AntimonidesMFe1−xSb, ScCo1−xSb, andMNiSb (M=Zr, Hf)

1999

The new antimonides MFe{sub 1{minus}x}Sb can be synthesized by arc-melting of M, Fe, and MSb{sub 2} (M = Zr, Hf). All title compounds crystallize in the TiNiSi structure type (space group Pnma, Z = 4). The lattice parameters of the new phases of MFe{sub 1{minus}x}Sb, as obtained from the bulk samples of the nominal compositions MFeSb, are a = 681.4(1) pm, b = 417.87(7) pm, c = 740.3(1) pm for ZrFe{sub 1{minus}x}Sb and a = 674.0(1) pm, b = 412.0(2) pm, c = 729.7(2) pm for HfFe{sub 1{minus}x}Sb. Under the reaction conditions used, the occupancy factors of the iron position content of ZrFe{sub 1{minus}x}Sb does not exceed 68(1)% (i.e., x = 0.32(1)). Extended Hueckel calculations, performed on …

Tunability by alkali metal cations of photoinduced charge separation in azacrown functionalized graphene.

2013

A modified graphene oxide containing aza-9-crown-3 ether units covalently anchored has been prepared; aqueous suspensions of this material in the presence of Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) cations exhibit enhanced electrochemical response, enhanced photoinduced charge separation and longer lifetimes, facts that can be attributed to stabilization of electrons on graphene oxide by the nearby alkali metal cation-azacrown complexes.

Modulation of the solubility of luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals through facile surface functionalization

2014

The solubility of luminescent quantum dots in solvents from hexane to water can be finely tuned by the choice of the countercations associated with carboxylate residues present on the nanocrystal surface. The resulting nanocrystals exhibit long term colloidal and chemical stability and maintain their photophysical properties.

Continuous hydrothermal synthesis of nanometric BaZrO3 in supercritical water

2007

Abstract Nanocrystalline barium zirconate (BaZrO 3 ) was synthesized using a hydrothermal synthesis process working in supercritical conditions and in a continuous way. By this method, we succeeded in the continuous and rapid production of nanopowders. As a preliminary work three barium precursors have been investigated: barium hydroxide (Ba(OH) 2 ), barium acetate (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 ) and barium nitrate (Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ). Two of them (Ba(CH 3 COO) 2 and Ba(NO 3 ) 2 ) led to the pure perovskite phase. Then an experimental design has been conducted in order to determine the influence of the experimental parameters on the crystallinity and the grain size of the final product.

CVD elaboration and in situ characterization of barium silicate thin films.

2010

International audience; This study is concerned with the elaboration of barium silicate thin films by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and in situ characterization by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) with an apparatus connected to the deposition reactor. The difficulty to find an efficient metal organic precursor for barium is described. After characterizations of the selected reactant, Ba(TMHD)2tetraglyme, the development of an original specific vapor delivering source which allows reactant sublimation in the CVD reactor was performed. In the most optimized cases, including use of oxygen introduction during the deposition, barium silicate films were obtained. Moreover,…
