Transformational leadership and absorptive capacity: an analysis of the organisational catalysts for this relationship
2017
ABSTRACTResearch analysing the antecedents of a firm’s absorptive capacity suggests that transformational leadership (TL) is one of its main determinants. However, the few studies focusing on the relationship between these two variables do not explicitly assess why transformational leaders facilitate knowledge acquisition, sharing and retention inside firms. This paper suggests that the reason is that the former contributes to the creation of an organisational context that favours learning processes. We test our research model on a sample of 467 Spanish industrial firms. Findings provide evidence that TL is positively related to the firm’s absorptive capacity and that this relationship is m…
The Complementary effect of internal learning capacity and absorptive capacity on performance: the mediating role of innovation capacity
2011
Organisations are finding it increasingly more difficult to keep abreast with the pace of change. The continuous rise in the number of business opportunities and the increase in global competition require firms to combine internal and external learning processes to renew and reconfigure existing capabilities and knowledge to enable them to meet environmental demands and to innovate. This study aims to unravel the complex linkage between internal learning capacity and absorptive capacity and at exploring the joint effect of both knowledge generation processes on innovation capacity. This study also proposes innovation capacity as an antecedent of business performance. Using data from 952 ind…
Knowledge management and innovation performance in a high-tech SMEs industry
2011
This article examines how knowledge management (KM) affects innovation performance within biotechnology firms. This is an industry in which small- and medium-sized biotech enterprises live together with the biotech divisions of large pharmaceutical firms. We conceptualize KM as a set of practices and dynamic capabilities, and hypothesize that KM dynamic capabilities act as a mediating variable between KM practices and innovation performance. We use structural equation modelling to test the hypotheses on a data set from the biotechnology industry. The results support our conceptualization and demonstrate its utility in explaining differences in innovation performance across firms. Findings …
Lanthanoid single-ion magnets based on polyoxometalates with a 5-fold symmetry: The series [LnP5W30O110]12– (Ln3+ = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb)
2012
A robust, stable and processable family of mononuclear lanthanoid complexes based on polyoxometalates (POMs) that exhibit single-molecule magnetic behavior is described here. Preyssler polyanions of general formula [LnP 5W 30O 110] 12- (Ln 3+ = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) have been characterized with static and dynamic magnetic measurements and heat capacity experiments. For the Dy and Ho derivatives, slow relaxation of the magnetization has been found. A simple interpretation of these properties is achieved by using crystal field theory. © 2012 American Chemical Society.
Quantile Regression Coefficients Modeling: a Penalized Approach
2018
Modeling quantile regression coefficients functions permits describing the coefficients of a quantile regression model as parametric functions of the order of the quantile. This approach has numerous advantages over standard quantile regression, in which different quantiles are estimated one at the time: it facilitates estimation and inference, improves the interpretation of the results, and is statistically efficient. On the other hand, it poses new challenges in terms of model selection. We describe a penalized approach that can be used to identify a parsimonious model that can fit the data well. We describe the method, and analyze the dataset that motivated the present paper. The propose…
Dynamic capabilities in times of educational change : the viewpoint of school leadership
2018
Nowadays educational organizations experience rapid changes, due to globalization, technological advancement, changing knowledge and competencies, and increasing social, political and cultural complexity. Consequently, these issues pose capability challenges to their leadership. In the rapidly changing educational circumstances, educational leadership needs to develop dynamic capabilities by integrating and reconfiguring their internal and external resources and competencies. However, few research have been carried out to comprehend the development of dynamic capabilities in educational organizations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how educational organizations develop dyna…
State Capacity, Legal Design and the Venality of Judicial Offices
2020
We develop a model of venal judicial offices, i.e., sales of public positions in the judicial sector, which were used extensively in France (and many other European countries) during the 17th and 18th centuries, and which led to vastly improved French State capacity despite limited opportunities to raise taxes and to borrow. In this model, venality provides financial resources for the ruler, at the cost of less control over judicial decisions. We rely on this model to provide an analytic narrative of the rise and the decline of venality in Old Regime France.
Aerobic Fitness Does Not Modify the Effect of FTO Variation on Body Composition Traits
2012
Purpose Poor physical fitness and obesity are risk factors for all cause morbidity and mortality. We aimed to clarify whether common genetic variants of key energy intake determinants in leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEPR), and fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) are associated with aerobic and neuromuscular performance, and whether aerobic fitness can alter the effect of these genotypes on body composition. Methods 846 healthy Finnish males of Caucasian origin were genotyped for FTO (rs8050136), LEP (rs7799039) and LEPR (rs8179183 and rs1137101) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and studied for associations with maximal oxygen consumption, body fat percent, serum leptin levels, wa…
Energy status and its control on embryogenesis of legumes: ATP distribution within Vicia faba embryos is developmentally regulated and correlated wit…
2003
To analyse the energy status of Vicia faba embryos in relation to differentiation processes, we measured ATP concentrations directly in cryosections using a quantitative bioluminescence-based imaging technique. This method provides a quantitative picture of the ATP distribution close to the in vivo situation. ATP concentrations were always highest within the axis. In pre-storage cotyledons, the level was low, but it increased strongly in the course of further development, starting from the abaxial region of cotyledons and moving towards the interior. Greening pattern, chlorophyll distribution and photosynthetic O2 production within embryos temporally and spatially corresponded to the ATP di…
