Assessment of Arundo donax Fibers for Oil Spill Recovery Applications

In the last years, natural fibers are increasingly investigated as an oil recovery system in order to overcome the oil spillage phenomena, thus preserving environment and aquatic life. In particular, lignocellulose-based fibers have recently been employed with promising results. In such a context, the aim of this paper is to assess the oil sorption capability of natural fibers extracted from the stem of the giant reed Arundo donax L., a perennial rhizomatous grass belonging to the Poaceae family that grows naturally all around the world thanks to its ability to tolerate different climatic conditions. Over the last 15 years, photovoltaics (PV) in Vietnam has experienced development. The increased installed capacity of PV requires more land for installation sites as well as for manufacturing the plants’ component and waste treatment during the plants’ decommissioning. As a developing country, in which more than 80% of the population’s livelihood depends on agriculture, there are concerns about the competition of land for agriculture and solar development. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider the concepts of exposure, coping capacity and adaptive capacity as a multiple structure of vulnerability in order to distinguish and interpret short-term coping responses and long-term strategic responses to food system vulnerability. Design/methodology/approach This paper applies an abductive approach for qualitative analysis of data, which were collected through 18 semi-structured interviews among Finnish food system actors. An increased prevalence of bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) has been demonstrated in children from a general population, and in non-asthmatic adults with allergic rhinitis. Thus, also children with allergic rhinitis are expected to be at higher risk of BHR. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for the discrimination of Oenococcus oeni isolates from different wine-growing regions in Germany

Reliable techniques are needed for the identification individual Oenococcus oeni strains with desirable flavor characteristics and to monitor the survival and contribution of inoculated and indigenous bacteria. Therefore, we investigated the suitability of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for the discrimination of 65 O. oeni isolates from six different wine-producing regions in Germany. Among the restriction enzymes tested, genomic DNA digestions with Sfi I were most effective by displaying 56 (86%) different banding profiles.
