Quality of life ranking of Spanish cities: A non-compensatory approach
2021
Abstract Urban areas are hubs of economic activity, but also consumption centers where a high quality of life may attract human capital and increase prospects of economic growth and well-being. We rank 73 Spanish cities on the basis of 35 individual indicators covering three basic facets of quality of life: socio-economic performance, general livability conditions, and residents' health status. We reject the conventional approach of compensability among different quality of life dimensions in favor of a Condorcet-inspired non-compensability approach. We obtain three partial composite indicators, one for each of the aforementioned dimensions, and a global indicator that synthesizes the three…
Die Wissenschaftsübersetzung als Generator symbolischen Kapitals
2021
ZusammenfassungThis paper investigates the function of translation in the context of scientific communication, examining the correspondence between the Italian universal scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, his translator Jean Senebier, and the Swiss naturalist Charles Bonnet. The main thesis is that the function of scientific translation goes far beyond the simple communication of scientific content and that it in fact played a complex role in the system of exchange and circulation of symbolic capital within the scientific community in the Early Modern Period. To illustrate the complexity of scientific translation, the paper focusses on Spallanzani’s remarkable adoption of a twofold perspective:…

Education, Growth and Development
2016
The link between higher-education investment and growth is more relevant when a country’s economy is no longer based on imitation, and begins to rely instead, on innovation as the main engine for growth. The knowledge triangle – research, education and innovation – was a core factor in European efforts to meet the Lisbon strategy and its stated objective that knowledge should help the European economy become the most dynamic knowledge-based one in the world. The failure of the Lisbon strategy was later conducive to a new ambitious scheme, namely Horizon 2020. Human capital, when transposed to educational matters, helps put forward an assessment of the relevance of the neo-Schumpeterian view…
Digital knowledge sharing and creative performance: Work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic
2021
Abstract The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing requirements have led to major disruptions in the world of work. The outcomes of the enforced and large-scale work from home (WFH) practices are currently largely unexplored. This study aims to address this gap in the research by investigating the external and internal digital knowledge sharing (DKS) and creative performance (CP) of employees under these extraordinary circumstances. The social capital theory was utilized as the theoretical lens for examining the associations of DKS and CP with demographic, individual, and organizational factors. An online cross-sectional survey was carried out among knowledge…
Este es el fin de la escuela tal y como la conocemos. Unas reflexiones en tiempo de confinamiento.
2020
The crisis caused by COVID-19 has placed the school in an unprecedented scenario. From one day to the next, teaching –when this has been possible– has moved from being face-to-face to being virtual. It remains unknown what percentage of teachers and students may be teaching and learning telematically and to what strategies they are resorting. Under these circumstances, the differences among students in terms of economic and cultural capital are aggravated. If radical measures are not taken, it is likely that this period without face-to-face tea- ching may take its toll on an entire generation. Teachers, students and parents are now accessing educational content –of the kind provided by the …
CVC AND INNOVATION PERFORMANCE: THE EFFECT OF TECHNOLOGICAL DISTANCE WITH STARTUPS AND COINVESTORS
2018
Firms are increasingly opening their boundaries by engaging in corporate venture capital (CVC) programs as potential gateway into knowledge and technologies of innovative startups. By investing in promising startups across diverse industries with different technological knowledge from the knowledge base of the investing corporate, CVC programs constitute a vehicle for corporates to both exploit and explore innovation opportunities. We first examine the relationship between more explorative CVC investments portfolio and the innovation performance of the corporate. Then, we argue that when syndicating the CVC investments with a co-investor, the portfolio of syndication partners may affect the…
CORPORATE VENTURE CAPITAL AND THE PROBABILITY TO ACQUIRE THE BACKED START-UP: A REAL OPTION PERSPECTIVE
2017
To sustain their competitive positions, an increasing number of corporates access new knowledge and technologies from emerging start-ups by engaging in Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) investments. CVC investments provide corporates the option to in-source start-ups’ knowledge and technologies through follow-on acquisitions. However acquiring a backed start-up is not always a guarantee of success. Then, corporates should consider which are the most appropriate conditions under which it is beneficial to acquire a CVC backed start-up. Utilizing the theoretical lens of Real Option, we examine the conditions under which a CVC investment may evolve into an acquisition of the backed start-up. We p…
