Metal-catalysed chemical reactions are often controlled by steric hindrance around the metal atom and it is rare that substituents far away of the reaction site could be differentiated during reaction, particularly if they are simple alkyl groups. Here we show that a gold catalyst is able to discriminate between linear carbon alkynes with 10 or 12 atoms in the chain during the oxidative homocoupling of alkynes: the former is fully reactive and the latter is practically unreactive. The molecular mechanism for the inverse electron demand 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones with vinyl ethers has been characterized using density functional theory methods with the B3LYP functional and the 6−31G* basis set. Relative rates, regioselectivity, endo/exo stereoselectivity, Lewis acid catalyst and solvent effects are analyzed and discussed. Four reactive channels associated with the formation of two pairs of diasteromeric regioisomers have been characterized. The reaction rates for the rearrangement of eleven (Z)-arylhydrazones of 5-amino-3-benzoyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole 3a-k into the relevant (2-aryl-5-phenyl-2H-1, 2,3-triazol-4-yl)ureas 4a-k in the presence of trichloroacetic acid or of piperidine have been determined in toluene at 313.1 K. Quantifying the limits of transition state theory in enzymatic catalysis

Significance Transition state theory (TST) is the most popular theory to calculate the rates of enzymatic reactions. However, in some cases TST could fail due to the violation of the nonrecrossing hypothesis at the transition state. In the present work we show that even for one of the most controversial enzymatic reactions—the hydride transfer catalyzed by dihydrofolate reductase—the error associated to TST represents only a minor correction to the reaction rate. Moreover, this error is actually larger for the reaction in solution than in the enzymatic active site. Boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) as an innovative support for carbohydrate transformation processes was evaluated, using density functional theory. The α-d-glucopyranose adsorption on a Pd30 cluster, supported on BNNT, was used to check both the local activity of topologically different metallic sites and the effects of the proximity of the BNNT surface to the same metallic sites. Detailed geometrical and electronic analyses performed on Pd30/BNNT and α-d-glucopyranose/Pd30/BNNT systems were discussed. Abstract Palladium (10 wt%) on a highly cross-linked imidazolium-based material was used as catalyst in 0.1 mol% in the Heck reaction between several alkenes and aryl iodides. Products were obtained from good to high yields. Deeper investigations showed a release of Pd species in solution and their capture by the imidazolium-based support. When a sixfold amount of support was employed the re-captured Pd species (0.5–0.6 wt%) were not anymore catalytically active. Abstract Borrowing Hydrogen (BH), also called Hydrogen Autotransfer (HA), reaction with neat ethylene glycol represents a key step in the preparation of β-amino alcohols. However, due to the stability of ethylene glycol, mono-activation has rarely been achieved. Herein, a combination of Pd/C and ZnO is reported as heterogeneous catalyst for this BH/HA reaction. This system results in an extremely air and moisture stable, and economic catalyst able to mono-functionalize ethylene glycol in water, without further activation of the diol. Kemp elimination: a probe reaction to study ionic liquids properties.

The amino induced elimination of benzisoxazole into the relevant o-cyanophenolate ion (Kemp elimination) has been studied in [bmim][BF 4] solution at 298 K. To have information about the interactions between reactants and ionic liquid, the reaction has been carried out at different temperatures (293-313 K). Several primary, secondary, and tertiary amines have been used to study the effect of amine structure on the reaction rate. The collected data show that the amine structure seems to have a crucial role in determining the reaction rate.
