Wine Consumption and Oral Cavity Cancer: Friend or Foe, Two Faces of Janus

2020

The health benefits of moderate wine consumption have been extensively studied during the last few decades. Some studies have demonstrated protective associations between moderate drinking and several diseases including oral cavity cancer (OCC). However, due to the various adverse effects related to ethanol content, the recommendation of moderate wine consumption has been controversial. The polyphenolic components of wine contribute to its beneficial effects with different biological pathways, including antioxidant, lipid regulating and anti-inflammatory effects. On the other hand, in the oral cavity, ethanol is oxidized to form acetaldehyde, a metabolite with genotoxic properties. This rev…

Automatic Myocardial Infarction Evaluation from Delayed-Enhancement Cardiac MRI Using Deep Convolutional Networks

2021

In this paper, we propose a new deep learning framework for an automatic myocardial infarction evaluation from clinical information and delayed enhancement-MRI (DE-MRI). The proposed framework addresses two tasks. The first task is automatic detection of myocardial contours, the infarcted area, the no-reflow area, and the left ventricular cavity from a short-axis DE-MRI series. It employs two segmentation neural networks. The first network is used to segment the anatomical structures such as the myocardium and left ventricular cavity. The second network is used to segment the pathological areas such as myocardial infarction, myocardial no-reflow, and normal myocardial region. The segmented …

An analysis of VLF electric field spectra measured in Titan's atmosphere by the Huygens probe

2009

[1] A numerical simulation of Titan's electromagnetic cavity in the VLF band is carried out using the Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) method, with the aim of assessing the VLF electric field spectra sent by the Huygens probe. In an Earth-like model, successive peaks would be expected in the spectra, associated with multiple reflections of the electromagnetic wave on the external surfaces of Titan's electromagnetic cavity, formed by the ionosphere and a conductive ground or underground surface. However, owing to high losses conferred by the electrical conductivity to Titan's atmosphere, the direct numerical and experimental spectra are decreasing functions of the frequency without resonances …

A numerical study of atmospheric signals in the Earth-ionosphere electromagnetic cavity with the Transmission Line Matrix method

2006

[1] The effect of the Earth-ionosphere electromagnetic cavity on the spectrum of an atmospheric signal generated by a broadband electrical current source is analyzed numerically by means of the Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) method. Two new TLM meshes are developed, one with transmission lines connected in parallel and the other with connections in series. The equations describing propagation through these parallel or series meshes are equivalent to the Maxwell equations for TEr or TMr modes in the spherical Earth-ionosphere cavity, respectively. The numerical algorithm obtains Schumann resonance frequencies very close to the experimental ones, confirming that this methodology is a valid nu…

Stimulated and unstimulated saliva samples have significantly different bacterial profiles

2018

Epidemiological studies use saliva on a regular basis as a non-invasive and easy-to-take sample, which is assumed to be a microbial representative of the oral cavity ecosystem. However, comparative studies between different kinds of saliva samples normally used in microbial studies are scarce. The aim of the current study was to compare oral microbiota composition between two different saliva samples collected simultaneously: non-stimulated saliva with paper points and stimulated saliva collected after chewing paraffin gum. DNA was extracted from saliva samples of ten individuals, then analyzed by 16S rRNA pyrosequencing to describe bacterial diversity. The results demonstrate significant d…

Intraportal transplantation of allogenic pancreatic islets encapsulated in barium alginate beads in diabetic rats.

2003

The survival of microencapsulated islets transplanted into the unmodified peritoneal cavity is limited, even if capsular overgrowth is restricted to a minimum, due to an insufficient oxygen supply to the islets. Therefore, research efforts should focus on finding or creating a transplantation site, which permits a closer contact between the encapsulated islets and the blood. For this reason, the liver could be an interesting candidate. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the intraportal transplantation of allogenic islets encapsulated in small-sized barium alginate beads is safe and succeeds to induce normoglycemia in diabetic rats. The intraportal transplantation o…

PLZT Electro-optic Q-switch for Er:Cr:YSGG laser

1999

Q-switching of the Er:Cr:YSGG laser at 2.79 micrometers is realized using electrooptic modulators of PLZT X/65/35 ceramics. The high (but slow as compared with single crystals) electrooptical effect in PLZT allowed to construct Q-switches with an aperture larger than 4 X 4 mm 2 , small lengths of 3 - 6 mm, with a control voltage of 1000 - 1500 V. Q-switching is realized using modulators in two modes--as a (lambda) /2 switch placed into the laser cavity at the Brewster angle avoiding reflection losses and as a (lambda) /4 switch with higher single pass losses due to Fresnel reflections. A higher laser output was obtained using (lambda) /2 switching. The obtained pulses had a halfwidth of 150…

Compound odontoma erupting in the mouth: 4-year follow-up of a clinical case

1992

A case of a compound odontoma erupting in the oral cavity is presented: a follow-up study of 4 yr has been performed evaluating the possible relationship with a previous dental trauma. A discussion is presented concerning the etiologic aspects, clinical signs, diagnostic aids and therapeutic approaches to this type of lesion.

The optimal age for performing surgery on patients with MEN 2B syndrome

2011

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes are characterized by the association of various endocrine neoplasias. Prophylactic thyroidectomy is the treatment of choice for patients with RET gene mutations. The age at which patients undergo prophylactic thyroidectomy may vary depending on the position of the RET gene codon. In cases of MEN 2B, when the mutation is carried in codons 883, 918 or 922, prophylactic thyroidectomy is performed prior to 6 months of age, due to the increased aggressiveness of these heterozygosities, which are capable of determining the onset of medullary cancer during the first months of life. We present two heterozygous twin patients with MEN 2B syndrome who were …

Systematische Analyse der Geometrie eines definierten Kontrastmittelbolus - Implikationen für die kontrastmittelverstärkte 3D-MR-Angiographie thoraka…

2005

Purpose: Little is known about the dispersion of a defined contrast bolus during its passage through the heart and pulmonary vasculature. The purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing a defined contrast bolus for ce-MRA of thoracic vessels. Materials and Methods: For analysis of bolus geometry, an ECG-gated saturation-recovery Turbo-Flash sequence with a TI of 20 msec was used. It was acquired axially at the level of the pulmonary trunc, so that with one data acquisition a curve analysis was possible in the ascending and descending aorta, and in the pulmonary trunc. Twenty-nine patients received 3 ml of Gd-DTPA diluted with saline to a total of 20 ml. Contrast injection was d…
