Interferometric microscopy study of the surface roughness of Portland cement under the action of different irrigants
2013
Objectives: Some investigations suggested common Portland cement (PC) as a substitute material for MTA for endodontic use; both MTA and PC have a similar composition. The aim of this study was to determine the surface roughness of common PC before and after the exposition to different endodontic irrigating solutions: 10% and 20% citric acid, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA) and 5% sodium hypochlorite. Study Design: Fifty PC samples in the form of cubes were prepared. PC was mixed with distilled water (powder/liquid ratio 3:1 by weight). The samples were immersed for one minute in 10% and 20% citric acid, 17% EDTA and 5% sodium hypochlorite. After gold coating, PC samples were examined …
Marginal integrity of class V restorations: SEM versus dye penetration.
2006
To perform an in vitro investigation on the marginal integrity of different adhesives (Optibond FL, Scotchbond 1XT, Clearfil SE Bond, Adper Prompt L-Pop, S(3) Bond, iBond exp., Adper Prompt L-Pop) in combination with Tetric Ceram as well as an experimental silorane-restorative (Hermes, Hermes Bond; 3M ESPE) using SEM and dye penetration (2% methylene blue) in a comparative manner.Standardized class V-cavities (3 mm x 1.5 mm) were prepared in 70 extracted human teeth (n=10). The adhesives were applied according to manufacturers' instructions. The cavities were restored with three increments. After finishing and polishing (Sof-Lex discs) and thermocycling (5000x, 5/55 degrees C), replicas wer…
Marginal integrity of different resin-based composites for posterior teeth: an in vitro dye-penetration study on eight resin-composite and compomer-/…
2002
Abstract Objective: To determine improvements in marginal adaptation of resin-based composite restorative systems by means of flow-composites (Solitaire 2/Gluma Solid Bond, Solitaire 2/Flow Line/Gluma Solid Bond, Point 4/Optibond Solo Plus, Point 4/Revolution/Optibond Solo Plus) and to determine the equality of simplified bonding systems (Solitaire 2/Gluma Comfort Bond, Tetric Ceram/Tetric Flow/Excite, Dyract AP/Prime & Bond NT/NRC, Pertac II/Prompt-L-Pop) in marginal gap formation. Methods: The marginal dye penetration (2% methylene-blue) was investigated separately for the approximal boxes of Class II mod-cavities with one cervical margin of the approximal box within enamel, the other wit…
Sealing ability of five different retrograde filling materials.
1996
The sealing ability of Amalgam, Harvard-Cement, Diaket, gold-leaf, and Ketac-Endo as retrofilling materials was investigated. Paper cones were fixed with Harvard-Cement in the instrumented roots of 100 extracted human incisors. Apicectomy was performed and a 2-mm-deep retrograde cavity was prepared. Teeth were assigned to five groups (n = 20); each group received a different filling material. Surfaces of the roots were isolated with nail polish. Teeth, were stored in 1% methylene blue dye for 72 h. Roots were sectioned, and the depth of dye penetration was evaluated through a stereomicroscope. Retrofills with Ketac-Endo showed significantly less leakage compared with amalgam. There was no s…
An in vitro comparison of different adhesive strategies on the micro push-out bond strength of a glass fiber post
2010
Objectives: To evaluate in vitro the push-out bond strengths of a glass fiber post adhesively luted with self-etching resin based and self-adhesive luting cements, as well as modified application procedure of self-adhesive luting cements in combination with single step self-etch adhesives. Materials and methods: Fifty single-rooted human maxillary central incisor teeth were endodontically treated and divided into five groups (n=10). Glass fiber posts (RelyX Fiber Post) were cemented with the following materials: group 1: ED Primer II/Panavia F 2.0 (PAN); group 2: RelyX Unicem (RU); group 3: Maxcem (MC); group 4: Adper Prompt L-Pop (PLP)/RelyX Unicem; group 5: Optibond all-in-one (OB)/Maxcem…
The effect of glass ionomer and adhesive cements on substance P expression in human dental pul
2013
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of glass ionomer and adhesive cements on SP expression in healthy human dental pulp. Study Design: Forty pulp samples were obtained from healthy premolars where extraction was indicated for orthodontic reasons. In thirty of these premolars a Class V cavity preparation was performed and teeth were equally divided in three groups: Experimental Group I: Glass Ionomer cement was placed in the cavity. Experimental Group II: Adhesive Cement was placed in the cavity. Positive control group: Class V cavities only. The remaining ten healthy premolars where extracted without treatment and served as a negative control group. All pulp sam…
Dental stem cell signaling pathway activation in response to hydraulic calcium silicate-based endodontic cements: A systematic review of in vitro stu…
2020
Abstract Objective To present a qualitative synthesis of in vitro studies which analyzed human dental stem cell (DSC) molecular signaling pathway activation in response to hydraulic calcium silicate-based cements (HCSCs). Methods A systematic electronic search was performed in Medline, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and SciELO databases on January 20 and last updated on March 20, 2020. In vitro studies assessing the implication of signaling pathways in activity related marker (gene/protein) expression and mineralization induced by HCSCs in contact with human DSCs were included. Results The search identified 277 preliminary results. After discarding duplicates, and screening of titles, abstr…
Repair of bone defect by nano-modified white mineral trioxide aggregates in rabbit: a histopathological study
2014
Background: Many researchers have tried to enhance materials functions in different aspects of science using nano-modification method, and in many cases the results have been encouraging. To evaluate the histopathological responses of the micro-/nano-size cement-type biomaterials derived from calcium silicate-based composition with addition of nano tricalcium aluminate (3CaO.Al 2 O 3 ) on bone healing response. Material and Methods: Ninety mature male rabbits were anesthetized and a bone defect was created in the right mandible. The rabbits were divided into three groups, which were in turn subdivided into five subgroups with six animals each based on the defect filled by: white mineral tri…
EMG-guided percutaneous placement of cement-augmented pedicle screws for osteoporotic thoracolumbar burst fractures
2017
Background: Percutaneous techniques have increasingly gained popularity in recent years. The application of technological innovation, including neuromonitoring techniques, has the potential to increase the safety and efficacy of these procedures. Methods: Thirty patients suffering from osteoporotic dorsolumbar burst fracture were prospectively enrolled in this study. The patients underwent percutaneous fenestrated pedicle screw fixation augmented with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) injection. A novel surgeon-dedicated neuromonitoring device was used in order to increase the safety and the accuracy of the screw insertion. A second group of 30 patients who did not undergo neuromonitoring durin…
Modes of periacetabular load transfer to cortical and cancellous bone after cemented versus uncemented total hip arthroplasty: A prospective study us…
2008
Stress-shielding and periprosthetic bone loss after total hip arthroplasty (THA) may be clinically relevant for high-demand patients. Analysis of cortical and cancellous bone density (BD) changes in vivo after THA is of interest to basic science researchers and joint reconstruction surgeons. An insufficient periprosthetic bone stock may predispose to migration, early mechanical failure, and major problems in revision surgery. We used computed tomography (CT)-assisted osteodensitometry in two prospectively analyzed cohorts after cemented (n = 21) versus noncemented (n = 23) cup fixation. Periacetabular BD (mgCaHa/mL) was determined in five CT scans cranial and five CT scans at the level of t…
