Relationship between circulating E-selectin, DD genotype of angiotensin-converting-enzyme, and cardiovascular damage in central obese subjects

Fifty-six young central obese patients were investigated to evaluate relationships between soluble E-selectin (sE-S), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism, left ventricular function and structure, and carotid morphology by determination of sE-S and ACE genotypes. Our results indicated that central obese subjects with concomitant higher levels of sE-S and ACE DD genotype may be characterized by early cardiovascular alterations and then considered a particular subset of subjects at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Evoked potential study in facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy.

Nerve conduction velocities (NCVs), somatosensory (SEPs) and auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 9 patients with facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy (FSHD) and in 20 age-matched controls. In FSHD patients a significant increase of the nerve distal sensory latencies and of the absolute SEP latencies revealed a subclinical involvement of the afferent sensory pathways, as well as the abnormal slowing of the later components of the BAEPs, pointed to a central auditory dysfunction. Paired associative stimulation (PAS) is a non-invasive stimulation method developed to induce bidirectional changes in the excitability of the cortical projections to the target muscles. However, very few studies have shown an association between changes in motor evoked potentials (MEP) after PAS and behavioral changes in healthy subjects. A 42-year-old woman presented with progressive blurred vision, vertigo, and headache. MRI showed bilateral intraocular protrusion of the optic nerve head and right transverse sinus thrombosis . Low-molecular-weight heparin was administered without symptom relief. Additional MRI showed left frontoparietal arachnoid space obliteration by pathological tissue, and infiltration of the sagittal and right transverse sinuses. Neurons are usually regarded as postmitotic cells that undergo apoptosis in response to cell cycle reactivation. Nevertheless, recent evidence indicates the existence of a defined developmental program that induces DNA replication in specific populations of neurons, which remain in a tetraploid state for the rest of their adult life. Similarly, de novo neuronal tetraploidization has also been described in the adult brain as an early hallmark of neurodegeneration.
