Seismic tomography tests applied to a gravity dam
2016
The control of the safety assessment of a dam is largely dependent on knowledge of the mechanical parameters of the actual construction, as well as its geological substratum. The application of geophysical methods can be used in existing dams to evaluate the materials (strength properties) and to verify if they match design expectations, as well as to contribute to the safety control. In particular seismics methods can considerably contribute to the examination indicating the less consolidated material and the degradation of mechanical parameters. For the characterization of the concrete conservation three seismic tomographies and a vertical seismic profile on the dam body were performed.Th…
Preparation and physico-chemical study of inclusion complexes between idebenone and modified beta-cyclodextrins
1996
The inclusion properties of modifiedβ-cyclodextrins (trimethyl-β-cyclodextrin, dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) towards idebenone were compared with naturalβ-cyclodextrin. The inclusion complexes were prepared by different methods (coprecipitation, kneading, and freeze-drying) and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, UV, CD and NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained by CD and NMR spectroscopy indicate a different orientation of idebenone in dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin with respect to other cyclodextrins. Stability constants of the complexes were determined in water at various temperatures and consequently thermodynamic parameters wer…
Genetic database development for the characterisation of Sicilian sheep population
2019
The most representative sheep in Sicily are Belicina, Comisana, Pinzirita, Barbarescaand the crossbred derived sheep from all this species. In this study, the allelic frequencies of the Sicilian sheep population were investigated. It currently represents the best way to determine the genetic identity and/or family even with limited amounts of sample or when the DNA is degraded. The aim of the study was to provide a reference data bank and to evaluate a microsatellite panel for pedigree analysis as suggested by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). There are various studies on European sheep, but few datasets were developed on the population of Sicilian sheep. The reference d…
Overview and Update on Extracellular Vesicles: Considerations on Exosomes and their Application in Modern Medicine
2022
In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in the knowledge of cell-secreted extracellular vesicle functions. They are membrane enclosed and loaded with proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and other biomolecules. After being released into the extracellular environment, some of these vesicles are delivered to recipient cells; consequently, the target cell may undergo physiological or pathological changes. Thus, extracellular vesicles as biological nano-carriers, have a pivotal role in facilitating long-distance intercellular communication. Understanding the mechanisms that mediate this communication process is important not only for basic science but also in medicine. Indeed, extracellular …
Use of Tiger Nut (
2019
The present study evaluated the replacement of beef fat in beef burgers using a tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) oil emulsion, in order to reduce total fat and saturated fatty acids in the studied samples. Three formulations were processed: Control—100% beef fat; tiger nut 50% (TN50)—50% of beef fat replaced using tiger nut oil emulsion and tiger nut 100% (TN100)—100% of beef fat replaced by tiger nut oil emulsion. The physicochemical parameters were affected after fat replacement. Moreover, the protein and fat contents decreased in those sample with tiger nut oil emulsion, thus the formulation TN100 can be considered as “reduced fat content”. Regarding color, an increased L* and b* value …
The goal of this study was to evaluate the type and the of conservation state of the metal alloy and the type of varnish of samples coming from “La Torre del Tempo” E. Tadini. The samples were characterized by Optical Microscopy, X-ray Diffractometry, micro-Raman Spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy.
Synthesis and characterization of perfluoroalkyl-pyrenes embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate matrix

Genotyping of bovine diarrhea virus (BVDV) isolated from cattle in Sicily
2011
Bovine Viral Diarrhoea - Mucosal Disease (BVD-MD) is a widely spread infectious disease that cause economically important losses in farms. Several epidemiological studies indicate a high genetic heterogeneity among Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) strains circulating in Italy. The aim of this study was to investigate the genotypes of BVDV in Sicily, a region in the South of Italy. For this purpose, 17 BVDV strains collected from cattle breed in Sicily between 2005 and 2008 were genetically typed by sequencing of 5'-untraslated region (5’-UTR) of the viral genome. In this study, phylogenetic analysis showed that all 17 examined strains were clustered within the BVDV genotype 1. Particular…
Morphological characterization, germination ecology and conservation of narrow endemic plant species of the Aeolian Islands (Sicily)
2016
This stusy is focused on four narrow endemic species of the Aeolian fora: Anthemis aeolica, Erysimum brulloi, Cytisus aeolicus and Silene hicesiae. Morphological characterization of seeds, seed germination and dormancy regulation have been investigated for these species.
Characterization of haemolytic activity of coelomocytes of Holothuria tubulosa
2013
Phylogenetic analysis recognizes echinoderms as a key group of deuterostomes, therefore the species in this group are useful for the study of the evolution of innate immunity responses. In addition, this marine invertebrate lives in coastal and estuarine waters that are directly exposed to potentially pathogenic microorganisms and stressful anthropogenic factors. Coelomocyte populations seem to be essential to immune-defence functions such as phagocytosis, ROI production, cytotoxicity, synthesis and release of antimicrobial substances including lectin, cytokine, C3-like expression, prophenoloxidase activity and capsule formation. Holothurians’ coelomocyte populations contain several coelomo…
