Councillors, Heretics, and Archbishops in Late Antique Hierapolis: Recent Epigraphical Findings Concerning the City, its Territory, and the History o…

2018

In the last years the Missione Archeologica Italiana di Hierapolis di Frigia (MAIER) has recovered some important epigraphic documents which offer new data for the history of the city of Hierapolis, its bishopric, and the surrounding territory in Late Antiquity (4th-6th cent.). The most recently published inscriptions are discussed in this paper in their historical context (parr. 1-3) and the development of Hierapolis’ bishopric and its episcopal prosopography between the 4th and the 9th cent. are analyzed through the examination of literary and epigraphical sources and the comparison with other relevant cities of Western Asia Minor (par. 4.a-f).

Michel Foucault and the enigmatic origins of bio-politics and governmentality

2012

Even a superficial look at the classical ideas and practices of government of populations makes it immediately apparent that there is a peculiarity in Foucault’s genealogy of western bio-politics and governmentality. According to Foucault, western governmental rationality can be traced back to the Judeo-Christian tradition in general and to the Christian ideology and practice of the pastorate in particular. In this article, my purpose is to show that Christianity was not the prelude to what Foucault calls governmentality but rather marked a rupture in the development that started in classical Greece and Rome and continued in early modern Europe. With the rise of Christianity, the majority …

Gennadios Scholarios and the Church of the Holy Apostles

2020

The article tests the established view that Gennadios Scholarios, the first patriarch of Constantinople after the 1453 Conquest, used the church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople as the seat of the Patriarchate for a few months in 1454 before moving to the building complex of the Pammakaristos monastery. After pointing out that all the sources that narrate the story of the installation of the Patriarchate in the famous Byzantine church date from the 16th century or later, the author examines sources contemporary with the events, including texts written by Scholarios himself. The aim of the article is to show that Scholarios officiated occasionally in the Holy Apostles and managed to sa…

Karl Holl (1866-1926) – luterański badacz źródeł patrystycznych

2019

Cristianesimo e modernità politica. il problema teologico-politico nell'ultimo Kant

2021

In this paper I will analyse the religious issue in the late Kantian work. I argue that Kant’s reflections on Christianity have to be strictly connected with those on law and history. This connection lead us to the political theological problem which is crucial in the case of Hegel as well. In the Encyclopedia Hegel explicitly takes inspiration from Kant who thinks that the problem of that age is the relation between religion and law. That is why Kant cannot be considered a liberal thinker because religion is not a mere private question for him but it has a public importance within his modern conception of history. In this sense, I also argue that Kant’s judg-ment on Christianity is more ne…

Abraham Bids Farewell to Hagar and Ishmael: Continuity and Variation of the Iconographic Type

2021

In traditional Christian artistic visualization, the episode of Hagar and Ishmael in the desert has given rise to various iconographic types: “The feast for the weaning of Isaac and Sara’s protests,” “Abraham bids farewell to Hagar and Ishmael,” “Hagar and Ishmael in the desert” and “Divine salvation for Hagar and Ishmael”. This study looks into the continuity and variation over time of the second of these types: “Abraham bids farewell to Hagar and Ishmael,” the one most depicted out of this entire biblical topic or episode. Since the Byzantine Octateuch in the East (11th century.) and the Canterbury Hexateuch (ca. 1025&ndash…
