Lament for the loss of al-Andalus in two Zajal from Cútar

This article edits, translates, comments and examines several aspects related with two strophic poems in Andalusian Arabic dialect. They are written in a miscellaneous volume recently found in Cútar (Málaga). Their contents speak about the hard moments lived during the last times of Muslim political power in the Iberian Peninsula. Mention is made to the copyist and the possible author of the poems.

Identification of indigoid compounds present in archaeological Maya blue by pyrolysis-silylation-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

Abstract A study based on the use of pyrolysis-silylation-gas chromatograpy–mass spectrometry (Py-GC–MS), which aimed to identify indigoid compounds and to clarify the multicomponent composition of Maya blue (MB) pigment, has been carried out. A series of reference compounds and synthetic MB specimens prepared in the laboratory have been analysed by this technique. An analysis of archaeological MB samples from 14 Maya archaeological sites from Mexico and Guatemala has also been performed. ABSTRACT: This article involves the study of Spanish posters that advertise the sale of publications printed by bookseller-publishers and printers in the modern world. The array of posters identified and preserved is not extensive, due to their ephemeral nature. However, their utilization is confirmed in documentary sources, references to these posters in gazettes, erudite correspondence, or literary testimonies themselves. I will attempt to demonstrate the role of the poster in the diffusion of publicity for these editorial novelties by considering walls as a space for public communication, serving the purpose of promoting new publications. The article shows how the classical political thinking, based on civic virtues, and modernist thinking, based on individualism and self-interest, formed the basis of the U.S. Constitution. The Founding Fathers did not realize the full extent of the rift between classicism and modernity. Tracking Five Millennia of Horse Management with Extensive Ancient Genome Time Series

Summary Horse domestication revolutionized warfare and accelerated travel, trade, and the geographic expansion of languages. Here, we present the largest DNA time series for a non-human organism to date, including genome-scale data from 149 ancient animals and 129 ancient genomes (≥1-fold coverage), 87 of which are new. This extensive dataset allows us to assess the modern legacy of past equestrian civilizations. We find that two extinct horse lineages existed during early domestication, one at the far western (Iberia) and the other at the far eastern range (Siberia) of Eurasia.
