Density of Lipschitz functions in energy

2020

In this paper, we show that the density in energy of Lipschitz functions in a Sobolev space $N^{1,p}(X)$ holds for all $p\in [1,\infty)$ whenever the space $X$ is complete and separable and the measure is Radon and finite on balls. Emphatically, $p=1$ is allowed. We also give a few corollaries and pose questions for future work. The proof is direct and does not involve the usual flow techniques from prior work. It also yields a new approximation technique, which has not appeared in prior work. Notable with all of this is that we do not use any form of Poincar\'e inequality or doubling assumption. The techniques are flexible and suggest a unification of a variety of existing literature on th…

Genotype–phenotype correlation in a new Fabry-disease-causing mutation

2019

Background: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare X-linked inherited lysosomal storage disorder caused by α-galactosidase A deficiency leading to intracellular glycosphingolipid accumulation. FD manifestation is multisystem, and can differ depending on disease-related genetic variants. Currently, more than 700 different FD-causing mutations have been identified in the human GLA gene. We identified a novel mutation in a Lithuanian family with classical manifestations of Fabry disease, revealing severe effects to the cardiovascular systems of heterozygous women. Case presentation: A 49-year-old woman underwent echocardiography due to progressive dyspnea that lasted seven years, reduced physical a…

Hardy inequalities and Assouad dimensions

2017

We establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for weighted Hardy inequalities in metric spaces in terms of Assouad (co)dimensions. Our sufficient conditions in the case where the complement is thin are new even in Euclidean spaces, while in the case of a thick complement we give new formulations for previously known sufficient conditions which reveal a natural duality between these two cases. Our necessary conditions are rather straight-forward generalizations from the unweighted case, but together with some examples they indicate the essential sharpness of our results. In addition, we consider the mixed case where the complement may contain both thick and thin parts.

Elementary hypergeometric functions, Heun functions, and moments of MKZ operators

2019

We consider some hypergeometric functions and prove that they are elementary functions. Consequently, the second order moments of Meyer-Konig and Zeller type operators are elementary functions. The higher order moments of these operators are expressed in terms of elementary functions and polylogarithms. Other applications are concerned with the expansion of certain Heun functions in series or finite sums of elementary hypergeometric functions.

Local multifractal analysis in metric spaces

2013

We study the local dimensions and local multifractal properties of measures on doubling metric spaces. Our aim is twofold. On one hand, we show that there are plenty of multifractal type measures in all metric spaces which satisfy only mild regularity conditions. On the other hand, we consider a local spectrum that can be used to gain finer information on the local behaviour of measures than its global counterpart.

Measures with predetermined regularity and inhomogeneous self-similar sets

2016

We show that if $X$ is a uniformly perfect complete metric space satisfying the finite doubling property, then there exists a fully supported measure with lower regularity dimension as close to the lower dimension of $X$ as we wish. Furthermore, we show that, under the condensation open set condition, the lower dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set $E_C$ coincides with the lower dimension of the condensation set $C$, while the Assouad dimension of $E_C$ is the maximum of the Assouad dimensions of the corresponding self-similar set $E$ and the condensation set $C$. If the Assouad dimension of $C$ is strictly smaller than the Assouad dimension of $E$, then the upper regularity dimens…

Self-affine sets with fibered tangents

2016

We study tangent sets of strictly self-affine sets in the plane. If a set in this class satisfies the strong separation condition and projects to a line segment for sufficiently many directions, then for each generic point there exists a rotation $\mathcal O$ such that all tangent sets at that point are either of the form $\mathcal O((\mathbb R \times C) \cap B(0,1))$, where $C$ is a closed porous set, or of the form $\mathcal O((\ell \times \{ 0 \}) \cap B(0,1))$, where $\ell$ is an interval.

A proof of Carleson's $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture

2019

In this paper we provide a proof of the Carleson $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture. This result yields a characterization (up to exceptional sets of zero length) of the tangent points of a Jordan curve in terms of the finiteness of the associated Carleson $\varepsilon^2$-square function.

Some fourth order CY-type operators with non symplectically rigid monodromy

2012

We study tuples of matrices with rigidity index two in $\Sp_4(\mathbb{C})$, which are potentially induced by differential operators of Calabi-Yau type. The constructions of those monodromy tuples via algebraic operations and middle convolutions and the related constructions on the level differential operators lead to previously known and new examples.
