Nocebo hyperalgesia induced by implicit conditioning.

abstract Background and objectives Nocebo hyperalgesia (i.e., increased pain sensitivity based on expectations) can be induced by conditioning, but is supposed to be mediated by conscious expectation. Although recent evidence points to the feasibility of subliminal conditioning of nocebo hyperalgesia with masked faces, face processing might be a special case and the practical implications of subliminal conditioning remain questionable. Cortical stimulation and reflex excitability of spinal cord neurones in man.

The H reflex technique was used to evaluate the influence exerted by cortical conditioning on the excitability of the alpha-motoneurone pool and on IA interneuronal activity (reciprocal inhibition). In ten subjects at absolute rest electrical and magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex was transcranially applied during flexor carpi radialis H reflex eliciting and in conditions of reciprocal inhibition induced by radial nerve stimulation. The time courses showed that at intensities below motor threshold, electrical brain conditioning induced an increase in the amplitude of the test reflex when the cortical shock was given 4 ms after the test H reflex. Adolescent exposure to cannabinoids enhances the behavioural effects of cocaine, and high novelty-seeking trait predicts greater sensitivity to the conditioned place preference (CPP) induced by this drug. Our aim was to evaluate the influence of novelty-seeking on the effects of adolescent cannabinoid exposure. Adolescent male mice were classified as high or low novelty seekers (HNS and LNS) in the hole-board test. Products of snowflaked Euclidean lines are not minimal for looking down

We show that products of snowflaked Euclidean lines are not minimal for looking down. This question was raised in Fractured fractals and broken dreams, Problem 11.17, by David and Semmes. The proof uses arguments developed by Le Donne, Li and Rajala to prove that the Heisenberg group is not minimal for looking down. By a method of shortcuts, we define a new distance $d$ such that the product of snowflaked Euclidean lines looks down on $(\mathbb R^N,d)$, but not vice versa.

A note on topological dimension, Hausdorff measure, and rectifiability

The purpose of this note is to record a consequence, for general metric spaces, of a recent result of David Bate. We prove the following fact: Let $X$ be a compact metric space of topological dimension $n$. Suppose that the $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of $X$, $\mathcal H^n(X)$, is finite. Suppose further that the lower n-density of the measure $\mathcal H^n$ is positive, $\mathcal H^n$-almost everywhere in $X$. Then $X$ contains an $n$-rectifiable subset of positive $\mathcal H^n$-measure. Moreover, the assumption on the lower density is unnecessary if one uses recently announced results of Cs\"ornyei-Jones.

Singular integrals on regular curves in the Heisenberg group

Let $\mathbb{H}$ be the first Heisenberg group, and let $k \in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{H} \, \setminus \, \{0\})$ be a kernel which is either odd or horizontally odd, and satisfies $$|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}k(p)| \leq C_{n}\|p\|^{-1 - n}, \qquad p \in \mathbb{H} \, \setminus \, \{0\}, \, n \geq 0.$$ The simplest examples include certain Riesz-type kernels first considered by Chousionis and Mattila, and the horizontally odd kernel $k(p) = \nabla_{\mathbb{H}} \log \|p\|$. We prove that convolution with $k$, as above, yields an $L^{2}$-bounded operator on regular curves in $\mathbb{H}$. This extends a theorem of G. David to the Heisenberg group. Existence of doubling measures via generalised nested cubes

Working on doubling metric spaces, we construct generalised dyadic cubes adapting ultrametric structure. If the space is complete, then the existence of such cubes and the mass distribution principle lead into a simple proof for the existence of doubling measures. As an application, we show that for each $\epsilon>0$ there is a doubling measure having full measure on a set of packing dimension at most $\epsilon$.

Dimension estimates for the boundary of planar Sobolev extension domains

We prove an asymptotically sharp dimension upper-bound for the boundary of bounded simply-connected planar Sobolev $W^{1,p}$-extension domains via the weak mean porosity of the boundary. The sharpness of our estimate is shown by examples.

Inside the Thompson laboratory during the “cerebellar years” and the continuing cerebellar story

This paper is based on the talk by one of the authors (DL) given at the symposium for the retirement of RF Thompson (RF Thompson: A bridge between 20th and 21st century neuroscience). We first make some informal observations of the historical times and research conditions in the Thompson laboratory when the cerebellum was found to play a critical role in eye lid classical conditioning, the "cerebellar years". These conditions influenced our collaborative international program on the phenomenon known as "transfer of training" or "savings".
