Visual Re-Ranking for Multi-Aspect Information Retrieval

2017

We present visual re-ranking, an interactive visualization technique for multi-aspect information retrieval. In multi-aspect search, the information need of the user consists of more than one aspect or query simultaneously. While visualization and interactive search user interface techniques for improving user interpretation of search results have been proposed, the current research lacks understanding on how useful these are for the user: whether they lead to quantifiable benefits in perceiving the result space and allow faster, and more precise retrieval. Our technique visualizes relevance and document density on a two-dimensional map with respect to the query phrases. Pointing to a locat…

Fake News Spreaders Detection: Sometimes Attention Is Not All You Need

2022

Guided by a corpus linguistics approach, in this article we present a comparative evaluation of State-of-the-Art (SotA) models, with a special focus on Transformers, to address the task of Fake News Spreaders (i.e., users that share Fake News) detection. First, we explore the reference multilingual dataset for the considered task, exploiting corpus linguistics techniques, such as chi-square test, keywords and Word Sketch. Second, we perform experiments on several models for Natural Language Processing. Third, we perform a comparative evaluation using the most recent Transformer-based models (RoBERTa, DistilBERT, BERT, XLNet, ELECTRA, Longformer) and other deep and non-deep SotA models (CNN,…

COURAGE at CheckThat! 2022: Harmful Tweet Detection using Graph Neural Networks and ELECTRA

2022

In this paper we propose a deep learning model based on graph machine learning (i.e. Graph Attention Convolution) and a pretrained transformer language model (i.e. ELECTRA). Our model was developed to detect harmful tweets about COVID-19 and was used to tackle subtask 1C (harmful tweet detection) at the CheckThat!Lab shared task organized as part of CLEF 2022. In this binary classification task, our proposed model reaches a binary F1 score (positive class label, i.e. harmful tweet) of 0.28 on the test set. We demonstrate that our approach outperforms the official baseline by 8% and describe our model as well as the experimental setup and results in detail. We also refer to limitations of th…

The action of the unitary group associated with a quadratic extension of fields

1999

Given a quadratic extension L/k of fields of characteristic different from 2 and a unitary space (V, f) of finite dimension over L, we give a representation, as simple as possible, of the form which f induces by restriction on a k-substructure of V. This, in turn, allows one to study the orbits of the unitary group U(V, f) in the set of k-substructures of V of a given dimension.

Mathematics and Music: a paradigmatic pair for basic learning

2012

The aim of the trial path described in this article is to highlight the possibility to develop intuition, analysis and synthesis abilities, which are typical of the logical - deductive mathematical thought, in primary school children (2nd class), through a significant approach to musical education, meant as systematic analysis of the sound parameters, which characterize and qualify its language. The Vygotskijan theoretical framework, which leads and interprets the didactic engineering proposed in class, emphasizes how the Mathematics - Music pair has promoted the changeover among different semiotic registers (Duval 2002), referred to Natural, iconographic, musical, geometric and pre - algeb…

Perspective validation of the eurofever classification criteria for monogenic periodic fevers.

2014

We recently proposed a set of provisional, evidence-based, clinical criteria for the classification of children and adults patients affected by monogenic periodic fevers. These criteria, built and validated in a cohort of 1215 patients with periodic fever enrolled in the Eurofever Registry from November 2009 to February 2013, displayed a high sensitivity and specificity.

Multi-temporal and Multi-source Remote Sensing Image Classification by Nonlinear Relative Normalization

2016

Remote sensing image classification exploiting multiple sensors is a very challenging problem: data from different modalities are affected by spectral distortions and mis-alignments of all kinds, and this hampers re-using models built for one image to be used successfully in other scenes. In order to adapt and transfer models across image acquisitions, one must be able to cope with datasets that are not co-registered, acquired under different illumination and atmospheric conditions, by different sensors, and with scarce ground references. Traditionally, methods based on histogram matching have been used. However, they fail when densities have very different shapes or when there is no corres…

Emergency Detection with Environment Sound Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

2020

In this paper, we propose a generic emergency detection system using only the sound produced in the environment. For this task, we employ multiple audio feature extraction techniques like the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, gammatone frequency cepstral coefficients, constant Q-transform and chromagram. After feature extraction, a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to classify an audio signal as a potential emergency situation or not. The entire model is based on our previous work that sets the new state of the art in the environment sound classification (ESC) task (Our paper is under review in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing and also avai…
