PRODOTTI NANOSTRUTTURATI PER LA PROTEZIONE DI SUPERFICI LAPIDEE: VALUTAZIONE DELL’EFFICACIA MEDIANTE TECNICHE FISICHE NON INVASIVE

2014

The use of nanoproducts in the Cultural Heritage (CH) field requires great sensitivity and responsibility and, above all, analytical research and studies evaluating effectively their potential use. In order to evaluate the capability of nanostructured protective in the CH field, limestone materials of historical-artistic interest were treated and then studied. The study focuses on the non-invasive evaluation of samples stone, of interest in the CH field, their surface has been tested with nanostructured products. In particular, samples of limestone of Favara (Sicily) have been studied, before and after artificial aging. The analytical methodology involved X-ray fluorescence measurements, in…

The Long and Winding Road to Useful Predictive Factors for Anti-EGFR Therapy in Metastatic Colorectal Carcinoma: The KRAS/BRAF Pathway

2010

Monoclonal antibodies targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have improved outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Among patients not carrying activating mutations in the KRAS gene, only a limited number will experience tumor response to these therapeutic agents. The role of BRAF mutations in determining resistance to this treatment is emerging through preclinical and clinical studies. Standardization and validation of laboratory mutation analysis is needed to allow an optimal use of anti-EGFR therapies in the management of colorectal carcinoma. Clinical single-arm and randomized studies were conducted both in first-line and refractory settings to evaluate…

Quantification of electrochromic kinetics by analysis of RGB digital video images

2018

A new, rapid, and practical procedure to obtain quantitative kinetic information of electrochromic materials is proposed. When the transition between two colors on a colored electrode surface is monitorized by digital video, the analysis of pixel color intensity (I) in sequential RGB digital images allows us to precise the half-life time (t1/2) of the color change since a maximum value of the standard deviation of the pixel intensity (σ(I)) is reached. We simulated and analyzed the evolution of standard deviation during an electrochromic transition in different circumstances (kinetic and diffusion control). As an example of application, electrochromic transitions of a thin film model, the P…

Anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activity of whole extract and isolated indicaxanthin from Opuntia ficus-indica associated with re-activation of …

2014

Phytochemicals may exert chemo-preventive effects on cells of the gastro-intestinal tract by modulating epigenome-regulated gene expression. The effect of the aqueous extract from the edible fruit of Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI extract), and of its betalain pigment indicaxanthin (Ind), on proliferation of human colon cancer Caco-2 cells has been investigated. Whole extract and Ind caused a dose-dependent apoptosis of proliferating cells at nutritionally relevant amounts, with IC50 400 ± 25 mg fresh pulp equivalents/mL, and 115 ± 15 μM (n = 9), respectively, without toxicity for post-confluent differentiated cells. Ind accounted for ∼80% of the effect of the whole extract. Ind did not cause ox…

Introducing a novel mesh following technique for approximation-free robotic tool path trajectories

2017

Abstract Modern tools for designing and manufacturing of large components with complex geometries allow more flexible production with reduced cycle times. This is achieved through a combination of traditional subtractive approaches and new additive manufacturing processes. The problem of generating optimum tool-paths to perform specific actions (e.g. part manufacturing or inspection) on curved surface samples, through numerical control machinery or robotic manipulators, will be increasingly encountered. Part variability often precludes using original design CAD data directly for toolpath generation (especially for composite materials), instead surface mapping software is often used to gener…

Estimation and prognosis value of elderly colorectal cancer patients' quality of life. : A population-based study

2014

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in France and predominantly affects older patients. Few studies evaluating baseline quality of life of those patients, its short term evolution and its prognosis value on patients' survival have been performed in the context of a population-based study. This work is based on a prospective longitudinal cohort study performed by the Burgundy Digestive Cancer Registry. All patients aged 65 and over, diagnosed with a new colorectal cancer and registered by the Registry between 2003 and 2005 were eligible. Among the 401 eligible patients, 246 fulfilled at least one questionnaire. Non-respondents were older and diagnosed with a more advance…

A search for new physics in dijet mass and angular distributions in pp collisions at [subscript √s=7] TeV measured with the ATLAS detector

2011

A search for new interactions and resonances produced in LHC proton–proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy ps = 7 TeV was performed with the ATLAS detector. Using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1, dijet mass and angular distributions were measured up to dijet masses of 3.5 TeV and were found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. This analysis sets limits at 95% CL on various models for new physics: an excited quark is excluded for mass between 0.60 and 2.64 TeV, an axigluon hypothesis is excluded for axigluon masses between 0.60 and 2.10 TeV and quantum black holes are excluded in models with six extra space–time dimensions for quantum gravity…

Extrinsic Effects on the Optical Properties of Surface Color Defects Generated in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanosheets

2021

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a wide-band gap van der Waals material able to host light-emitting centers behaving as single photon sources. Here, we report the generation of color defects in hBN nanosheets dispersed on different kinds of substrates by thermal treatment processes. The optical properties of these defects have been studied using microspectroscopy techniques and far-field simulations of their light emission. Using these techniques, we have found that subsequent ozone treatments of the deposited hBN nanosheets improve the optical emission properties of created defects, as revealed by their zero-phonon linewidth narrowing and reduction of background emission. Microlocalized co…
