Transarterial chemoembolization and sorafenib in patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma: time to enter routine clinical practice?

2015

According to the guidelines of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), patients affected from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be classified according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system. This classification system divides HCC patients in five stages (0, A, B, C and D) on the basis of a number of prognostic and treatment- related variables such as tumor status and liver function. A specific treat ment approach is then proposed for each of the above-mentioned stages. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is recommended as first-line therapy in the treatment of patients with intermediate-stage (BCLC-B class) HCC [1]. The efficacy of this procedure…

Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) strongly relies on a priori assumptions and additional information to overcome ill-posedness. The major challenge of obtaining good reconstructions consists in finding ways to add information that effectively restricts the solution space without violating properties of the sought solution. In this work, we attempt to address this problem by constructing a spatio-temporal basis of body surface potentials (BSP) from simulations of many focal excitations. Measured BSPs are projected onto this basis and reconstructions are expressed as linear combinations of corresponding transmembrane voltage (TMV) basis vectors. The novel method was applied to simulations o…

Analytic evaluation of spectral moments

1988

In this paper an analytic procedure that drastically reduces the computational effort in evaluating the spectral moments of the response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems is presented. It is shown that the cross-spectral moments of any order of two oscillators subjected to a filtered stochastic process can be obtained in a recursive manner as a linear combination of the spectral moment of each oscillator up to the third order separately taken. A numerical procedure is also presented in order to evaluate such first few spectral moments.

Analytical evaluation of structural response for stationary multicorrelated input

1990

Abstract An analytical procedure is presented which can drastically reduce computational effort in the evaluation of the spectral moments of an elastic linear multi-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a stationary multicorrelated input process. The reduction in computer time is possible since the cross-spectral moments of two oscillators can be obtained in recursive manner as a linear combination of the spectral moment of each oscillator taken separately, which is evaluated by means of a very fast numerical technique.

Spectral moments of the edge adjacency matrix in molecular graphs. 3. Molecules containing cycles

1998

A substructural approach to quantitative structure−property relationships based on the spectral moments of the edge adjacency matrix is extended to molecules containing cycles. Spectral moments are expressed as linear combinations of structural fragments of any kind of nonweighted graphs. The boiling points of a series of 80 cycloalkanes was well-described by the present approach. The predictive power of the model was proved by using a test set of another 26 compounds. An equation that expresses the contribution of the different fragments of the molecules to the boiling point was obtained.

The Effect of Tiotropium in Symptomatic Asthma Despite Low- to Medium-Dose Inhaled Corticosteroids: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

2014

BackgroundTiotropium, a once-daily long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator, has demonstrated efficacy in patients with asthma who were symptomatic despite treatment with medium- to high-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of once-daily tiotropium Respimat (5 μg or 2.5 μg), compared with placebo Respimat, as add-on therapy to low- to medium-dose ICS for adults with symptomatic asthma.MethodsA phase III, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted (NCT01316380). Adults with symptomatic asthma receiving low- to medium-dose ICS (200-400 μg budesonide or equivalent dose) and a pre-bronchodilator forced expira…

Periodic Discrete and Discrete-Time Splines

2018

Periodic discrete splines with different periods and spans are introduced in Sect. 3.4 of Volume I (Averbuch, Neittaanmaki and Zheludev, Spline and Spline Wavelet Methods with Applications to Signal and Image Processing, Springer, Berlin, 2014) [2]. In this chapter, we regard periodic discrete splines as a base for the design of periodic discrete-time wavelets, wavelet packets and wavelet frames. Therefore, only the discrete splines whose spans are 2 are outlined. These discrete splines are linear combinations of the discrete B-splines. So also, the so-called discrete-time splines are discussed in the chapter that are linear combinations of the discrete-time B-splines. The discrete-time B-s…

Block-Based Inversion of the Heat Equations

2014

This chapter presents robust methods, which refine the algorithms, in Sect. 7.2, for inversion of the heat equations. The idea behind the algorithms is to solve the inversion problem separately in different frequency bands. This is achieved by using spline wavelet packets. The solutions that minimize some parameterized quadratic functionals, are derived as linear combinations of the wavelet packets. Choice of parameters, which is performed automatically, determines the trade-off between the solution regularity and the initial data approximation. The Spline Harmonic Analysis (SHA) technique provides a unified computational scheme for the fast implementation of the algorithm and an explicit r…

Derived variables calculated from similar joint responses: some characteristics and examples

1995

Abstract A technique (Cox and Wermuth, 1992) is reviewed for finding linear combinations of a set of response variables having special relations of linear conditional independence with a set of explanatory variables. A theorem in linear algebra is used both to examine conditions in which the derived variables take a specially simple form and lead to reduced computations. Examples are discussed of medical and psychological investigations in which the method has aided interpretation.

Block Based Deconvolution Algorithm Using Spline Wavelet Packets

2010

This paper presents robust algorithms to deconvolve discrete noised signals and images. The idea behind the algorithms is to solve the convolution equation separately in different frequency bands. This is achieved by using spline wavelet packets. The solutions are derived as linear combinations of the wavelet packets that minimize some parameterized quadratic functionals. Parameters choice, which is performed automatically, determines the trade-off between the solution regularity and the initial data approximation. This technique, which id called Spline Harmonic Analysis, provides a unified computational scheme for the design of orthonormal spline wavelet packets, fast implementation of the…
